Retired Emirati police officer missing in India

DUBAI // A retired Emirati police officer on holiday in India has mysteriously disappeared from the southern city of Hyderabad.

Saleh Rashed Ali Saleh Al Abdouli, 47, from Fujairah, went missing nearly a week ago after he went out for a morning walk from his wife's family home, and he has not been seen since. Mr Al Abdouli had arrived in the city with his wife, son and six daughters on July 8.

"He went for a walk on July 29 at around 9am," said Mahesh Goud, sub inspector at the Langer House police station. "After that he did not return. He was not carrying any telephone with him and he is new to the area."

Mr Abdouli's family lodged a missing persons report two days later. Investigators have ruled out kidnapping as there has been no ransom demand. "Our investigations are on. We have circulated his pictures among 64 of our police stations with descriptions of what he was wearing," said Rambabu, a sub inspector investigating the case.

Mr Al Abdouli's anxious family members have distributed his picture to hotels, hospitals and mosques, urging people to contact them if they had any information. "We have checked every hospital," said his wife, Imtiaz Bhanu, 37. "I am really worried.

"My entire family and friends are looking for him. He doesn't know the language and speaks only Arabic. He is not that familiar with the place."

Mrs Bhanu said her husband often went for walks in the area. "The morning he left, we were all sleeping because it is Ramadan.

"My mother saw him leave and thought he would be back soon. But I started getting worried when he hadn't returned by noon. I tried reaching him on his mobile phone but realised he had left it at home."

Her husband had more than 25,000 Indian rupees (Dh1,637) with him on the day he disappeared.

"If it was kidnapping, there would have been calls. Maybe he decided to travel outside the city and will be back when his money is exhausted. He cannot leave the country as his passport is with me and we have notified the airport authorities," she said.

The trip to India is the first time Mr Abdouli has travelled outside the UAE. The family were scheduled to return to the UAE on September 7.

They have notified the UAE consulate in Mumbai, which is assisting them.

Customer Service Tips for Small Business from Big Business ...

Got some awesome lessons in customer service during a recent stay at The Hotel Palomar in Chicago. First I should say that I am a sucker for modern luxury hotels, however with a business degree in hospitality management I am also a stickler for details and pay close attention to service. They began with a poorly designed entrance, too far back from the street for you to see it easily if you got dropped at the corner by a taxi, like I did. I actually had to call the front desk to find out where the front door was since I could see only the restaurant entrance and not the hotel. I was frustrated and a bit tired from travel, but persisted.

Winning Customers

With no bellman available (that was the only time that happened, but it was noticeable) I hauled my luggage inside and had to stand at the front desk while the clerk was checking something or completing another transaction.? Hmm, customer service fail here.? She didn?t look up or acknowledge me until she was ready (major oops). By this time, I was visibly irritated. I got checked in and headed up. It improved when I found I was, as requested, at the top of the hotel, a very quiet room (away from the elevators and vending), and bonus to be near the workout center that I planned to use daily. Okay, they were turning it around.

I tested them further by requesting extra hangars from housekeeping which arrived promptly (a request like that has been known to be completely missed.) Customer service kudo!? The room was well appointed, and I noted only one burned out lightbulb (I did say I was a stickler) that I reported to the front desk and it was replaced by the time I returned from my first meeting. The convenience of the workout center being on the top floor instead of buried in the basement was greatly appreciated and saved a lot of time going up and down the elevators. Windows and a workout is always a winning combination.

Space to Get Organized

The bath was beautifully designed with a shelf above the vanity, the perfect place for any female traveler to line up her bath needs, organize makeup and allow counterspace for a room mate when needed.? I also got a kick out of the monogrammed P on the towels that would certainly cut down on pilferage unless your name actually used a P logo.

My first morning, I called room service asking for almond milk, since the best they could do was soy (I?m lactose intolerant), they sent up a glass free of charge. Day two, breakfast arrived promptly and was a full charge, Day three they ran late and comped it. So far, so good on customer service.

I ate at the hotel three out of five nights, yes it really was that good. The first night I finished up early and being on East Coast time, I was tired and headed to bed early (9pm. CST). Just as I turned out the lights, I heard a sharp rap at my door. I called out to see what it was and they kept saying ?wine.? I opened the door and the server presented me with a bottle of wine and a note from the restaurant manager with a thanks for my enjoying dinner in his establishment. It was a lovely gesture, even at that late hour.

Modern Luxury

On the second of my stay I needed to order a birthday cake and flowers, at the last minute, for a friend of mine. The concierge was a great help, taking over all of the details and expediting a delicious cake and gorgeous flowers. It got even better when I worked with another concierge to plan my sightseeing and tourist adventures. They presented me all of the options and made all necessary reservations. The one even walked me by phone to the location I needed to get to when I panicked (I have get-lost-a-phobia.)

What they did . . . what you can take away and apply to your business:

When they ran late, they comped breakfast . . . what do you offer when there is a delay to your customer in service or product delivery?

When I showed a genuine interest in their food and beverage they gifted me a bottle of wine . . . what do you do to say thank you to your clients?

The concierge provided VIP treatment to answer travel and gourmet needs . . . do you offer a VIP level of service for your top clients? What do you do for extreme client care?

When I panicked on my way to a specific destination, the concierge patiently stayed on the phone with me and walked me there . . . are you walking your clients through potentially confusing processes and implementation?

Overall, they ensured that I?d be likely to make a return visit. The positives outweighed the negatives though I did ask the horse and carriage driver for recommendations of other boutique hotels with a modern flavor. I tend to be very loyal when everything is flawless. The Hotel did a lot right and needs a bit of work in a couple of areas, like the front desk.? Still valuable lessons in customer service and how to win customers and influence clients (aka guests in this case.)

NASA jubilant as Curiosity rover lands safely on Mars

NASA's control room erupted with cheers as confirmation reached Earth that the Curiosity rover successfully landed on Mars. Scientists and engineers hugged, sobbed and punched the air as the first images from the rover's cameras came down.

The first pictures, low-res thumbnails taken through the rover's rear hazard avoidance cameras and a clear dust filter, showed the Martian horizon and one of the rover's wheels. Shortly after, the front cameras took the rover's first self-portrait: its shadow on the Martian surface.

Now safely on the ground in the Gale Crater, Curiosity can begin its two-year mission: to find whether Mars has the crucial ingredients that could once have supported life.

No wonder mission control went wild: the landing was the most ambitious and daring ever attempted on another world.

Curiosity's predecessors, Spirit and Opportunity, arrived on Mars swaddled in airbags that cushioned them as they crashed into the planet's surface and bounced and rolled to their final landing sites.

But Curiosity is 10 times their weight, and would punch straight through any airbag NASA could build. So mission engineers designed the Sky Crane. For the last 20 metres of its trip to the surface, Curiosity was slowly lowered on three nylon tethers from a hovering descent vehicle, held in place by retrorockets.

But that was just one element of the landing choreography. The capsule containing the rover and descent vehicle entered the Martian atmosphere at 5900 metres per second. Almost immediately, small charges detonated and ejected two blocks of tungsten ? each about the size of a laptop, and weighing 75 kilograms.

Jettisoning these weights tilted the capsule so it could catch air and fly across the Martian landscape much like a skydiver in a wingsuit. The capsule steered itself using small rockets and autonomous navigation software. Similar software was used for the Apollo missions, but this is the first time that a robot on another planet navigated itself without human input.

At an altitude of 11 kilometres, the spacecraft dropped six more 25-kilogram blocks to shift its orientation once more, then deployed the largest supersonic parachute ever sent to another planet. The parachute slowed the spacecraft from 400 metres per second to 80 metres per second in less than two minutes.

At about the same time, the capsule dropped its heat shield, exposing the rover ? and its cameras and landing radar ? to the cold Martian air. The cameras started looking for the ground, snapping photos once every four seconds. (In the coming days, these images will be stitched together into a video of the nerve-wracking final descent.)

At 1.6 kilometres up, the parachute let go, and the descent vehicle plummeted in free fall for a fraction of a second. Then eight retrorockets roared to life, slowing the vehicle to an eventual stop for the ambitious Sky Crane manoeuvre.

"It looks a little bit crazy," admitted Adam Steltzner, who heads the landing team, in a press conference before landing. "I promise you it is the least crazy of the methods you could use to land a rover the size of Curiosity on Mars."

Curiosity is the first rover to use its own wheels as landing gear. The six wheels are half a metre in diameter and as thin as cardboard. They move independently beneath the rover, so that if it had to, it could drive over an obstacle as tall as a coffee table.

Though its landing was entirely different, Curiosity learned some tricks from Spirit and Opportunity. Those rovers' wheels had small holes by which they were clamped to their landing pads before being released. Later, the rovers' handlers found they could see when the wheels were slipping on the sandy Martian surface by measuring the distance between the marks left by these holes in the rovers' tracks.

So Curiosity also has holes in its wheels, which spell out "JPL" (for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where the rover was built and is operated) in Morse code.

The wheels will have to wait to make their first tracks, however. First, the rover has to stretch its robotic "arm" and "neck". The former carries a suite of instruments including a camera that will be used to peer at rocks, like a geologist using a hand lens. The latter is a mast carrying high-resolution cameras that will reveal panoramas of Curiosity's surroundings, and a laser that will zap rocks from a distance to help reveal their composition.

Once it gets into its scientific stride, Curiosity will use its onboard chemistry lab to look for organic molecules required as the basic building blocks of life, and chemical energy sources that could have been used by Martian microbes.

The final destination is Aeolis Mons, a five-kilometre high mountain in the middle of Gale Crater. Gale is an impact crater, but is thought to have been full of water for hundreds of millions of years. As Curiosity climbs Aeolis Mons, it should encounter layers of sediments revealing what mission leader John Grotzinger calls "the dimension of deep time".

Iran tests upgraded version of short-range missile

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran claimed Saturday it has successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range ballistic missile with improved accuracy, increasing the Islamic Republic's capability to strike both land and naval targets.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said the solid-fueled Fateh-110 has a range of 300 kilometers (185 miles). He claimed the weapon could strike with pin-point precision, making it the most accurate weapon of its kind in Iran's arsenal.

"By reaching this generation of the Fateh-110, a new capability has been added to our armed forces in striking sea and land targets," state TV quoted Vahidi as saying. "Few countries in the world possess the technology to build such missiles."

Iran's military leaders have said they believe future wars will be air- and sea-based and Tehran has sought to upgrade its air defense systems and naval power in anticipation of such a possibility.

Iran has also been pushing to upgrade its missiles, which already can target Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East. The Pentagon released a report in June noting significant advances in Iranian missile technology, acknowledging that the Islamic Republic has improved the accuracy and firing capabilities of its missiles.

The Fateh-110, or Conqueror, is a single-stage solid-propellant, surface-to-surface missile put into service in 2002. The earlier version of the domestically-produced missile had a range of 200 kilometers (120 miles). The weapon was developed by Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization.

Iran also has a variety of longer-ranged missiles including a Shahab-3 variant with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) that can reach Israel and southern Europe. Many of its missiles could in theory carry a nuclear warhead.

Iran considers both the United States and Israel as potential adversaries. Neither country has ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program, which they claim is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement that it was concerned by the reports of the missile test.

"This move calls into question again Iran's stated commitment to a purely peaceful nuclear program," the ministry said Saturday. "We remain concerned that Iran continues to develop missile technology with the clear intention of extending the range and sophistication of its missiles."

Israel is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) away from Iran's western borders, while the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain, some 200 kilometers (120 miles) from Iranian shores in the Persian Gulf.

Iran's military leaders have threatened that Israel "would disappear from the Earth" if it attacks Iran. Military commanders have also warned that 35 American military bases in the Middle East are within Iran's missile range and would be destroyed within seconds after any U.S. attack on Iran.

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo. Since 1992, Iran has produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes and a fighter plane.

After the networking event, enter your contacts into your CRM system if you have one, and a spreadsheet if you don?t. Then when you need to make a referral the details are to hand for you. Once quick call to confirm the contact does what is required and then you can make an introduction.
