College students more eager for marriage than their parents are

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Reaching adulthood certainly takes longer than it did a generation ago, but new research shows one way that parents are contributing to the delay.

A national study found that college students think 25 years old is the "right age" to get married, while a majority of parents feel 25 is still a little too soon. So it's no coincidence that when Justin Bieber said he'd like to wed by 25, Oprah Winfrey urged him to wait longer.

"The assumption has been that the younger generation wants to delay marriage and parents are hassling them about when they would get married," said Brian Willoughby, a professor at Brigham Young University and lead author of the study. "We actually found the opposite, that the parental generation is showing the 'slow down' mindset more than the young adults."

Willoughby and his co-authors in BYU's School of Family Life gathered info from 536 college students and their parents from five college campuses around the country (BYU was not in the sample). As they report in The Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, the scholars found the hesitation is consistent across gender.

"Initially we thought that this might be dads wanting their daughters to delay marriage," Willoughby said. "Moms and dads trended together -- gender wasn't a factor."

One of the driving forces behind parents' restraint is the feeling that their children should get an education first. While they generally feel marriage is important, parents think the "right age" is one year older than what their children say. Excluding teen marriages, research doesn't support the notion that there is an optimal time to tie the knot.

"I think parents have a lot of fear for their kids that makes them want to delay the transitions to adulthood," Willoughby said.

According to Census data, the median age for first marriages is 27. Willoughby says that what people say is the "right age" generally comes a few years before the actual marriage age.

"What happens is that someone thinks that 25 is when they want to get married," Willoughby said. "So at age 25, they start changing their patterns around dating, and it takes two or so years to make the transition."

Though BYU students weren't in Willoughby's sample, the university's own records show about 25 percent of its students are married. Willoughby said that Mormon young adults typically marry about two years younger than their peers nationally and have risen in sync with national trends.

Chad Olsen, a graduate student in BYU's School of Family Life, is a co-author on the new study. Professors Jason Carroll, Larry Nelson and Rick Miller are also co-authors.

Local church to host classical concert Sunday

PALESTINE ? The Piatigorsky Foundation will present a special classical music concert featuring New York cellist Evan Drachman and pianist Richard Dowling at 3 p.m. Sunday at Brushy Creek United Methodist Church.

Last season, the foundation presented a tour of eight concerts in East Texas reaching more than 1,100 people in Houston, Palestine Crockett and Eastland.

The Piatigorsky Foundation aims to reach hundreds of people across the East Texas region to increase awareness and appreciation of classical music in communities throughout the state.

?We are so excited to have the Piatigorsky Foundation bring this wonderful opportunity to this area once again,? Brushy Creek UMC church member Lois LaRoe said previously. ?This is a very unique chance for people in this area to hear music of this caliber.?

Founder and Artistic Director of The Piatigorsky Foundation, Drachman spends much of his time performing recitals, concerti and chamber music in the United States and abroad. The organization is named for? Drachman?s grandfather, cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.

Drachman received his BMA from The Curtis Institute of Music in 1988. In 1999, he recorded his first CD, A Frog He Went a Courting, with pianist and fellow Piatigorsky musician Dowling.

Following this success, Drachman and Dowling released two more recordings titled, Infinity in 2004 and Romance and Revelation in 2007.

This summer, Drachman and pianist Victor Santiago Asuncion recorded works including Rachmaninoff?s Sonata in G minor Op.19 for cello and piano. This new CD will be released in December.

Dowling appears regularly across the United States in solo recitals, at chamber music and jazz/ragtime festivals, and as a guest soloist in concerto performances with orchestras.

In the United States, he has received nationwide attention for recitals seen on the PBS television program ?Debut,? and heard on the NPR radio program ?Performance Today.? Works of Chopin, Ravel, Gershwin, and ragtime figure prominently in his repertoire.

Dowling is also a versatile recording artist with over a dozen CDs of classical, chamber, ragtime, jazz, and popular music.

Following the one-hour concert, guests are invited stay to meet the artists. For more information, contact Lois LaRoe at 903-549-2809.

Simple Fleshes Out Its Online Banking Service With Mobile Check Depositing

simple-fake-checkFrom the outset, online banking startup Simple has been focused on supplanting the brick-and-mortar banks in its users' lives, but they haven't always been equipped to handle every little transaction that comes up. Case in point -- what happens when someone cuts you a check (after all, the holidays are right around the corner)? Well, that's no longer the case. According to a post on the official Simple blog, users are now able to deposit money from those pesky pieces of paper just by taking a photo with the company's iOS app.

George R. R. Martin?s A World of Ice and Fire ? A Game of Thrones Guide for iPhone and iPad

I have mixed feelings about A Song of Ice and Fire, and the TV show adaption, Game of Thrones. On one had, they're brilliant, genre-pushing stories that create a rich, wonderfully textured world and weave together an incredibly intricate web of characters and plots. On the other hand, the world is so sprawling, the characters so numerous I've almost gotten to the point where I've stopped caring. A little discipline, a little restraint, and a lot more focus, I think, would help enormously. Absent that, however, there's now George R. R. Martin?s A World of Ice and Fire ? A Game of Thrones Guide for iPhone and iPad.

George R. R. Martin?s A World of Ice and Fire ? A Game of Thrones Guide for iPhone and iPad literally puts the entire world -- 540+ people and 380+ places, in the palm of your hand. The interface is decent, which is more than you can say for a lot of official apps from official publishers, and the content is detailed enough for anyone this side of Sheldon Cooper.

The free app includes 8 characters from the first book of the series, A Game of Thrones, and maps for the north and south. You can buy information packs via in-app purchase for $0.99 a pop, or $4.99 for the entire series to date. You can also set a "spoiler" level, so if you haven't read all the books, you can lock out characters and events you haven't gotten to get.

There are the usual big brand annoyances, of course. You can favorite articles but you can't copy any text or share any entries, socially or otherwise. Also, while the maps are movable and zoomable, they didn't take the time to nail the animation, so it's jerky and janky.

But if you simply want to look up characters and locations to better keep track of the Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones universe, this companion app has you covered.

Veenome Raises Another $600K To Translate Video Content Into Machine-Readable Data

veenome-logoVeenome, a startup that analyzes video content to improve ad targeting (as well as analytics and SEO), just announced that it has raised $600,000 in new funding. The company is also announcing a partnership with video ad network BrightRoll. Veenome CEO Kevin Lenane said this is part of a larger shift in strategy ? the startup originally focused on providing its services to publishers, but is now trying to work with networks. Turns out that selling to publishers was a bigger challenge than expected (Lenane said many are "not as motivated by revenue as you might think"), while the new approach should give Veenome wider reach.

National Secular Society - NSS questions new report on Religious ...

A new report from Oxford University, which says that teachers are afraid to teach religious education in case they are perceived as "evangelising", has been questioned today by the National Secular Society.

The report says that according to a poll it has undertaken, two thirds of people think RE should be taught in schools and that Christianity should be given preference.

But a closer look at the sponsors of this research shows it has received ?48,500 funding from a strongly evangelical organisation, the Jerusalem Trust which is underpinned by money from the Sainsbury family.

Among the Jerusalem Trust's stated aims are: "to advance the Christian religion" and "Evangelism and Christian mission in the UK: Trustees are particularly interested in Christian projects that develop new ways of working with children and young people."

The University received a further ?100,000 from Culham and St Gabriel's Trust, a Christian organisation with links to the Church of England, which runs an organisation called RE Today whose sole purpose is to advance the strength and prominence of religious education in schools.

The Oxford Study also produced an opinion poll that showed two thirds of the population in favour of religious education and the importance of Christianity, although the poll has not been published, so it is difficult to know what questions were asked and how they were framed in order to get these results.

Terry Sanderson, president of the National Secular Society, said: "This study has been reported with very little mention of who has sponsored it and what their motives are. Is it just evangelical Christians surreptitiously pushing forward their agenda under a respectable academic cover?"

Mr Sanderson said that The National Secular Society is receiving an increasing number of complaints from parents about the intensity and often evangelical nature of religious education that is being taught in schools ? even community schools.

"Parents contact us frequently with stories of their children having been told that if they don't believe in God there will be dire consequences for them. One parent said that her child had been told that the Bible is the most important book they will ever read and much more important than any science book.

"Religious education will always be a happy hunting ground for the evangelically minded. They realise that the cross-over point from education to proselytising is very hard to define."

Novel power system for space travel tested

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A team of researchers, including engineers from Los Alamos National Laboratory, has demonstrated a new concept for a reliable nuclear reactor that could be used on space flights.

The research team recently demonstrated the first use of a heat pipe to cool a small nuclear reactor and power a Stirling engine at the Nevada National Security Site's Device Assembly Facility near Las Vegas. The Demonstration Using Flattop Fissions (DUFF) experiment produced 24 watts of electricity. A team of engineers from Los Alamos, the NASA Glenn Research Center and National Security Technologies LLC (NSTec) conducted the experiment.

Heat pipe technology was invented at Los Alamos in 1963. A heat pipe is a sealed tube with an internal fluid that can efficiently transfer heat produced by a reactor with no moving parts. A Stirling engine is a relatively simple closed-loop engine that converts heat energy into electrical power using a pressurized gas to move a piston. Using the two devices in tandem allowed for creation of a simple, reliable electric power supply that can be adapted for space applications.

Researchers configured DUFF on an existing experiment, known as Flattop, to allow for a water-based heat pipe to extract heat from uranium. Heat from the fission reaction was transferred to a pair of free-piston Stirling engines manufactured by Sunpower Inc., based in Athens Ohio. Engineers from NASA Glenn designed and built the heat pipe and Stirling assembly and operated the engines during the experiment. Los Alamos nuclear engineers operated the Flattop assembly under authorization from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

DUFF is the first demonstration of a space nuclear reactor system to produce electricity in the United States since 1965, and the experiment confirms basic nuclear reactor physics and heat transfer for a simple, reliable space power system.

"The nuclear characteristics and thermal power level of the experiment are remarkably similar to our space reactor flight concept," said Los Alamos engineer David Poston. "The biggest difference between DUFF and a possible flight system is that the Stirling input temperature would need to be hotter to attain the required efficiency and power output needed for space missions."

"The heat pipe and Stirling engine used in this test are meant to represent one module that could be used in a space system," said Marc Gibson of NASA Glenn. "A flight system might use several modules to produce approximately one kilowatt of electricity."

Current space missions typically use power supplies that generate about the same amount of electricity as one or two household light bulbs. The availability of more power could potentially boost the speed with which mission data is transmitted back to Earth, or increase the number of instruments that could be operated at the same time aboard a spacecraft.

"A small, simple, lightweight fission power system could lead to a new and enhanced capability for space science and exploration," said Los Alamos project lead Patrick McClure. "We hope that this proof of concept will soon move us from the old-frontier of Nevada to the new-frontier of outer space."

Los Alamos research on the project was made possible through Los Alamos's Laboratory-Directed Research and Development Program (LDRD), which is funded by a small percentage of the Laboratory's overall budget to invest in new or cutting-edge research. NASA Glenn and NSTec also used internal support to fund their contributions to the experiment.

"Perhaps one of the more important aspects of this experiment is that it was taken from concept to completion in 6 months for less than a million dollars," said Los Alamos engineer David Dixon. "We wanted to show that with a tightly-knit and focused team, it is possible to successfully perform practical reactor testing."

10 Ways To Fung Shui Your Home - Business Insider

A peaceful home is a happy home, and you can bring harmony to yours with the strategies of Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of balancing the energies of a space.

There are lots of ways to apply Feng Shui to your house or bedroom. These 10 tips are a great way to start.

  1. De-clutter: Purging your home of stacked papers, knickknacks, and other objects you don't really need helps "clear the mind of toxic thoughts," according to Elle Decor.?

  2. Pay attention to color schemes: Bright colors like red and orange in a family room facilitate lively conversation, while green and blues in a bedroom cue relaxation, according to Elle Decor. The magazine also notes that "red inspires passion" and "black and white embody grace."

  3. Buy perennial plants: Pick up plants that will stay green year-round. These plants will inspire you throughout the year, according to HGTV.

  4. Allow in natural light: This is one of the basics of Feng Shui decorating, according to About.com.

  5. Two is better than one: When shopping for items like nightstands, buy two, according to Ken Lauher, a Feng Shui expert. Two of these items create balance and equality.

  6. Place more mirrors in the bedroom: On his blog, Lauher also suggests hanging mirrors around the bed. It will increase "your fortune and happiness, improve communication in a relationship, and provide a sense of 'completion' to your goals," he writes.?

  7. Think natural: When choosing furniture and decor, choose items that are made of wood, stone, or metal. Feng Shui's overall theme is "natural," according to Interior Design Pro.

  8. Move away from the door: Especially in your bedroom, be sure to place your bed against a solid wall and away from the door. This creates a feeling of safety and security, according to HGTV.

  9. Round it out: Opt for round lighting fixtures and curved nightstands, since square corners can create a "sharp" environment that results in negative energy, according to HGTV.

  10. Cover it up: Buy a folding screen to shield your desk so you're not reminded of day-to-day stresses while lying in bed or sitting on your couch, HGTV suggests.

Iconic street foods every world traveler must try

12 hrs.

While many travelers make it a priority to book a table at Michelin-starred?restaurants around the world, some of the best food ? street food ? can be had for a fraction of the cost, in the most unlikely of places.

From stainless steel push carts and dubious-looking night market stalls, to kiosks?and the backs of bicycles, street food is ubiquitous around the world.

From the familiar New York City hot dog and Belgian pomme frites, to the venerated?Vietnamese b?nh m? and lesser-known Taiwanese stinky tofu, street food comes?in a palette of palate-pleasing dishes, from savory, deep-fried munchies like Amsterdam?s kroket to sweet treats like a Breton cr?pe.

The Daily Meal has canvassed the globe, eating everything from crowd-pleasing?gelato to a fear-inducing but oh-so-amazing spleen sandwich, to curate its list of 27?favorite street foods sure to provide any traveler???from the novice to the pro???with a?memorable, moveable feast.

Slideshow: See which?iconic street foods every world traveler must try

Takoyaki (Osaka, Japan)
Takoyaki, battered golf-ball-sized balls stuffed with octopus, are a typical street food in Japan. Made of a wheat flour-based batter and cooked in a special pan to shape the snack into a ball, the small, round treat is filled with diced or minced octopus, tempura scraps, pickled ginger and green onion. Takoyaki are drizzled with okonomi sauce (similar to Worcestershire) or mayonnaise.

Juso, the red light district in north central Osaka, is the best place to try takoyaki, as it was invented in Osaka. Look for takoyaki stalls near the train station.

Cr?pes (Brittany, France)
The popular thin French pancake, usually made from wheat (cr?pes de Froment) or buckwheat flour (galette), originated in Brittany in northwest France. The batter is spread onto a billig???a big, round cast-iron griddle???and spread in a circular motion with a rozell, a wooden utensil. Sweet cr?pes dusted with sugar or topped with freshly-sliced fruit and savory versions stuffed with meats and cheeses are folded into cones and sold in cr?peries across France, including Fleur de Bl? Noir cr?perie in?Saint-Quay Portrieux, where visitors can take a cr?pe-making class?and eat the results.

Empanadas (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
Empanadas are hand-held pies stuffed with meat, cheese or vegetables and surrounded by pastry dough that is baked or fried. El Sanjuanino in Buenos Aires serves some of the best empanadas in the capital.

Tamales (Clarksdale, Miss.)
There are several stories about the origins of tamales in the Mississippi Delta, a leaf-shaped alluvial plain in Western Mississippi defined by the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. Some say tamales were introduced during the U.S.-Mexican War, while others contend Mexican migrant workers brought tamales with them when they came to work the cotton fields. Still others contend the tamale was always in the area, with Native Americans making the snack. No matter its origins, the tamale is a staple of snack foods here.

Enthusiasts can tour the Southern Foodways Alliances Tamale Trail. A tamale here is smaller than Latin-style ones. Traditionally made with boiled or browned pork (but beef and turkey are also used) and masa or cornmeal and wrapped inside a corn husk, the bundles are simmered and have a grittier texture than those made south of the border. Some even fry their hot tamales here.

Abes BBQ serves bundles of hot tamales along with its famous barbecued pork, beef and ribs at the fabled crossroads of highways 49 and 61 (where blues pioneer Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil in return for prowess on the guitar.

The Folly of my Youth and the Mid Life Crisis: Death Sucks

My father in law is dying. ?I know I have mentioned it before but now it is getting serious. ?After a year and a half of threatening to die I think he actually might go and do it in the next few days. ?And I am exhausted.

Why am I exhausted? ?If you are family and reading this you might be really thinking that. ?I mean I haven't been sitting at the house for 8 hours getting up and down with him and mom, I haven't taken any night shifts, I wasn't there last night for all the crying out in pain and emotional turmoil as they waited for someone to deliver the morphine and the wait for it to take affect.

I ?have done nothing.?Literally. I have done nothing for the past few days. ?I am just standing at the ready. ?Afraid to involve myself in any project, just sitting and waiting. ?A million things on my to do list, my son home from college and yet here I am. ?Waiting. ?My job is support. ?I mainly support my husband but try to have a loving word or scripture for the family as well. ?But mostly I am just waiting for John to come home and talk to me, tell me the latest, and experience the emotions. ?Normally I get to break down but this time it is his turn and I will be the rock. ?And it is exhausting and I don't want to do anything. ?I don't even want to write this but I am trying to force myself to do something this afternoon and I usually find it helpful to write out my feelings. ?So I am sharing with you that I would rather be doing something destructive. ?Eating everything in sight or, better yet, a little retail therapy, buy everything in sight!

So now that you know I am totally not feeling it right now I am none-the-less going to share a few scriptures that I am finding encouraging. ?I ?have brief moments where I decide not to run away from my emotions and here are a few things I have found during those times:

Ps 100:4-5 "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. ?For the Lord is good and is love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

I am calling that one the verse that starts off for Don and ends for the rest of us. ?Don is going to enter the Gates of heaven but his faithfulness, Don's steadfast and unwavering devotion to the Lord, continues through the generations that come behind him. ?The generations that he has influenced. ?And while we are quick to think of his family Don has made a difference in the lives of men and women well beyond his family through his teaching both of the Word at church and through his teaching of Advanced First Aid (now EMT) at Normandale. ?Many a Minneapolis cop got their initial first aid training from John's parents in the last 80's and early 90's. ?How thankful we all are, how blessed and rich our lives have been because of the gift of Don.

I read other things and think of Don:

Is 21:3-4 "At this my body is racked with pain, pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor; I am staggered by what I hear and bewildered by what I see. ?My heart falters, fear makes me tremble; the twilight I longed for has become a horror to me."

I know, that isn't encouraging at all. ?But I love how the bible can express pain as well as give hope. ?I don't know why some people have to die so painfully. ?It doesn't seem fair. ?This is not a man who deserves this death. ?Even yesterday when I was over there we were laughing as he started asking John's mom if she knew the Truth. ?As his mind goes what is left is the Truth of God's love and his continued need to share it with others. ?John drove their car home last night as Jake and I both needed cars yesterday. ?On the floor of the passenger side are the scripture memory cards his parents continue to read and memorize. When I mentioned Ps 100:4-5 at the house John went to get the bible to read it. ?John's mom kept saying, "recite it". ?I bet she already knew what he was going to read. ?God doesn't promise us freedom from pain or trials in this life on earth but he does promise us that freedom in heaven and soon Don will follow Jesus through those gates and into that peace.

And finally, and again this isn't really for encouragement here just something I read and thought about,

Proverbs 25:20 "Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart."

When someone is struggling, it isn't helpful to be cheerful. ?This sucks! ?Watching this man die sucks. ?Even if this wasn't a hard and long death, if he has simply died peacefully in his sleep, this would suck. ?I will not be denied the right to grieve nor will I deny my family that right. ?We are not alone, God is with us, and one day we will sing songs again but today we will feel and experience these moments of pain and grief and be stressed and overwhelmed.

Bleh...

Off to switch the laundry. ?I like to be prepared with clean underwear in all situations.

The Untold Stories: International law, The M23 Insurgency, and ...

The M23?s latest assault on Goma has an international legal consequence and constitutes a set of war crimes. The large-scale military assault launched by M23 on Goma, and the manner in which both Rwanda and M23 forces are fighting this war, raise numerous red flags regarding large scale violations of human rights and international humanitarian law (IHL). Such violations have long characterised the international legal framework in armed conflict; yet despite post-Cold War improvements in the enforceability of international criminal law, in the Congo context those who perpetrate human rights violations and war crimes seem largely immune to legal accountability.
The indictment of the Congo War Lord commonly known as Terminator has proved disastrous and difficult to enforce and the current UN Security Council sanctions against the M23 rebel leader Sultan Makenga is likely to suffer the same fate, yet the Rwandan leaders who have been supporting these conflicts in Congo for almost 2 decades seem not bothered by the continued death of innocent people. The International Community with the largest UN Peace keeping force in the world stationed in Congo, just looked on as the M23 forces matched into Goma without any resistance.
Certainly, international law offers no panacea for the death and destruction of war; nor does most media coverage of the Congo conflict devote more than the scantiest attention to the human rights implications of such violence. International law does, however, provide the most important standard against which the conduct of opposing sides can be judged. Such judgments have political currency, if not during the heat of battle then later. International human rights campaigner Raji Sourani described it in the midst of the current violence, human rights is the ?skin? to protect civilians from the all-out aggression of those who attack them.
International law impacts the present war in Congo in two key ways. One pertains to whether the violence deployed by each side complies with or violates IHL, in particular the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocol I of 1977. The other, more complicated issue pertains to the assistance the Rwandan government is giving the rebel group M23.
Since the 1996 Rwanda has been involved directly or indirectly in the destabilization of Congo. Rwanda has been denying or giving vague excuses .However, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the official guardian and authoritative interpreter of IHL, has consistently maintained that the Fourth Geneva Convention will be applicable to countries or individuals who support not only rebels but rather all activities that result in the crimes against humanity. This view is endorsed by a vast preponderance of international legal opinion, including United Nations resolutions and the opinion of the International Court of Justice.
Rwanda under Kagame for his personal economic reasons also advances the novel interpretations of IHL in order to project the legitimacy of dubiously legal or patently unlawful practices in his involvement in Congo by arguing that Congo harbors the former militias who committed genocide in Rwanda in 1994. Rwanda?s consistent position over almost 2 decades that Congo harbors militias and as such, Rwanda has to go to Congo any time its coffers are dry, does not hold any legal water in the glass.
This extends to the interpretation that Rwanda?s own conduct is not tightly regulated by IHL when engaged in a war against what they call militias and sometimes terrorists. However, the Geneva Conventions are considered customary international law, and therefore apply any time and place and on any parties who use armed force to wage war on enemies.
The fundamental purpose of IHL is to protect civilians and minimize avoidable harm during armed conflicts. Under IHL, five core principles govern what conduct is lawful in armed conflict. Violations of these constitute grave breaches and thus can be considered war crimes. These principles are: civilian immunity (ie, the prohibition against intentionally targeting civilians or otherwise treating them as combatants); distinction (i.e., the imperative to distinguish between civilians and combatants in military operations, and for combatants to distinguish themselves as such through identifiable dress and insignia and by carrying arms openly); proportionality (ie, the requirement to use force in a manner that is proportionate to the military value of the target); necessity (ie, the obligation to restrict targets or tactics to those necessary to achieve legitimate military goals); and humane treatment (ie, the prohibition of torture, inhumane and degrading treatment of prisoners, and the imperative to guard the rights and interests of ?protected persons?, the legal term for civilians in captured territories)..
Unfortunately, there has been violation of these entire international legal obligations by the rebels in the territory they have captured. Reports have indicated massive killings, abductions of civilians, rape of women and disappearances. Ultimately, no matter how much Rwanda wants to use Rwanda militias in Congo as the political, legal and moral interference in the Congo affairs, its actions and legacy, are not far from those of other states which systematically use violence against civilians. This will be determined by its adherence to or violations of normative interpretations of international law. The longer Rwanda under Kagame continues to kill Congolese directly or by his rebel proxy M23 indiscriminately and with impunity, and the longer it maintains the military and financial illegal support of this notorious rebel group, the more such policies will face greater de-legitimation and opprobrium.

One Direction makes Billboard history, holds off Aguilera, Del Rey

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British boyband One Direction made Billboard chart history on Wednesday after storming to the top of the 200 album chart with their second album "Take Me Home," holding off competition from Christina Aguilera, Soundgarden and Lana Del Rey.

"Take Me Home" notched the third-biggest opening week sales of the year with 540,000 units sold according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan, placing it behind only Mumford & Son's "Babel" and Taylor Swift's "Red," which had the year's biggest opening with 1.2 million copies sold.

This is also the first time a British band have seen their first two albums debut at the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Their first album "Up All Night" shot to the top of the chart with 176,000 copies in March this year.

The lead single from "Take Me Home," "Live While We're Young" also made Billboard chart history after selling 341,000 copies in its first week, becoming the biggest opening week single sales for a non-U.S. artist.

One Direction were able to trump a new release from pop star and "The Voice" judge Aguilera, who debuted at No. 7 with her fifth studio album "Lotus," selling 73,000 copies.

She was unable to replicate the success of fellow "Voice" judge Adam Levine, whose band Maroon 5 shot to No. 2 on the album chart in July with "Overexposed," selling 222,000 copies.

The members of the British-Irish quintet One Direction, aged between 18 and 20, are Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne. They have come a long way since forming on Britain's "The X Factor," coming in third place and going on to conquer the U.S. and build a devoted following of fans.

Their success has also piqued the curiosity of interviewer Barbara Walters, who will be speaking to the band for her annual "The 10 Most Fascinating People," airing on ABC on December 12.

The band will face stiff competition from R&B star Rihanna for the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week, as her new album "Unapologetic" is set for a big debut.

Elsewhere on the album chart, seven new debuts entered the top 10 this week.

Taylor Swift's "Red" was knocked down to No. 2 by One Direction's debut, while the soundtrack for the final "Twilight" film, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2," debuted at No. 3 with sales of 93,000 after the film hit theaters last week.

The soundtrack features lead single "The Forgotten" by Green Day and songs by Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, Fiest and a duet between "Twilight" cast member Nikki Reed and husband Paul McDonald, a former "American Idol" finalist.

Canadian R&B star The Weeknd landed at No. 4 this week with his hotly anticipated debut, "Trilogy," while 1990s grunge rock band Soundgarden rounded out the top five with "King Animal," their first album in 16 years.

Green Day's "Dos!," the second installment of their trilogy of new albums this year, came in at No. 9 on the chart with 69,000 copies, a big drop from their first album "Uno!," which debuted at No. 2 in October with sales of 139,000 copies. The third installment, "Tre!," is due out on December 11.

Indie-pop songstress Del Rey rounded out the top ten with her latest studio set "Paradise," an eight-song record which was also offered as part of a deluxe edition of her debut album "Born To Die," which notched No. 2 on the chart in February.

Home Improvement Tips That Can Save You A Lot Of Money ...

Search around and price out different contractors to get the best deals. The best way to feel safe when getting a contractor is to ask a friend or family member who has had their home remodeled by one for a good recommendation. This way you know you?re hiring a reliable contractor that you can trust to fix up your home.

Consider making your counters out of recycled materials for an environmentally friendly home improvement. You can also choose stained concrete or indigenous stone for an Earth-friendly look. Richlite is a product made of recycled paper, and IceStone is an absolutely stunning counter material made of glass and concrete, and both are green.

An easy home improvement idea that will help you to conserving energy is to install one or many motion detectors on the exterior of your home. Motion sensors in addition to lighting timers keep the areas you want lit at night but also save you money on your electric bill.

When you are making a home improvement that could affect the area around it, be sure to take proper care of the area. If you will be painting, it is a good idea to lay a tarp down to protect flooring and furniture from paint splatters and spills. Make sure to cover any surfaces that you do not want scratched or damaged.

Before beginning a kitchen remodel, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials in place. Shims are items that are easy to forget, but are vital if you want to have level kitchen cabinets. Shims are tapered pieces of wood that allow you correct for minor imperfections in your walls and floors.

So, ?that wall has got to go? on that home improvement project! Stop! Before you demolish something double check the existing structure! It is easy to just tear down a wall and not know what is inside of it. There may be electrical components that need to be in tact that you may want to keep.

If you are replacing your exterior lighting, you may want to consider installing outdoor motion detectors in strategic areas. These lighting fixtures are activated by sensors that recognize movement, and will only light up areas when it is necessary. This will save you money by lowering your outdoor energy use.

If you are forming the construction of your house, try not to put a television in the kitchen. If you love television, you will then spend more time in the kitchen. This will put you in a position where you are tempted more, with the plethora of food around you.

Improve your home by removing items you don?t need. You will have more space and your home will appear to be bigger. De-clutter by throwing away, storing or donating unneeded items such as clothes, furniture, etc. Even packing your stuff away in boxes and putting them in the attic will remove things from your immediate living area.

Choose two easy-to-remember days of the year to check and replace, if necessary, the batteries in your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. New Year?s Day and the Fourth of July are ideal times to perform this task. You should also make sure that your fire extinguishers work and discuss your family?s exit strategy in the event of a fire.

To make your living room or bedroom appear larger than it actually is, try this trick from professional interior decorators: shift furniture away from walls. Not only does this create the illusion of extra square footage, it also lends a distinctively contemporary look and feel to even the most traditionally decorated rooms.

Remember those annoying little paper jewelry boxes that you get with every purchase? Don?t throw them out. Instead utilize them to clean your desk or bathroom drawer. Remove the lids and clip the boxes together to fit the inside of your drawer. You can now use them to categorize and store your little things such as paper clips, erasers, notepads and other small items.

Choose wallpaper patterns carefully. Avoid using overpowering patterns in small spaces; conversely, using a bold design in a very large room will make it appear cozier. Never use a patterned wallpaper if you have patterned carpet or window coverings. For a room full of awkward corners and recesses, pick a wallpaper with a random design that the eye doesn?t tend to follow. This will help to disguise any imperfections in the walls.

Spice up your mantelpiece by decorating it with similarly grouped items. Collect objects that are similar in nature such as wood items, only items with letters on them, items that are old fashioned or different sized decorative paper boxes. They create an interesting focal point near your fireplace and can prove to be conversation pieces.

Surely, you found the information that preceded to be helpful for many different projects around your house. A bit of knowledge about home improvement can go a long way in helping you transform your house into your home. Take on the challenge of making the improvements on your home with the help of the included information.

(KCBS) ? KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews three films this week. The first, Jan explores Ang Lee?s ?Life of Pi? starring Suraj Sharma and Gerard Depardieu. Next Jan reviews ?Hitchcock? starring Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson, Toni Collette and Jessica Biel. Finally, the documentary ?Chasing Ice? about award-winning National Geographic photographer, James Balog.

KCBS Entertainment Report: Life of Pi, Hitchcock, Chasing Ice

    ?
    LIFE OF PI (PG)

A family moves its zoo halfway around the world. On the journey, a teen is stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger. Sounds impossible to film, but turns out to be a remarkable, touching movie.

Director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) took the best-selling novel and made it a painstakingly authentic odyssey, pushing the boundaries of 3-D technology, visual effects and cinematic storytelling.

Suraj Sharma is Pi, grounding this remarkable saga with humanity. It?s a surprise and one to see on the big screen.

    HITCHCOCK (PG-13)

Partly based on Stephen Rebello?s ?Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho,? director Sasha Gervasi wanted to make sure the story gave credit and importance to Hitchcock?s wife and collaborator, Alma. Anyone who has studied the cinematic genius of Hitchcock knows Alma Reville Hitchcock had an instinct for the right thing, experience to help him technically and a desire to stay out of the limelight.

Anthony Hopkins does a credible job as Hitchcock, less cruel but just as obsessed as Toby Jones in the recent HBO movie about the making of The Birds. Helen Mirren plays it strong and smart as Alma, but those of us who have studied that real woman will have trouble buying into her romance. Scarlett Johansson as smoothly credible as Janet Leigh, as is the rest of the cast.

I love back stories about show business, and this is one to see.

Love among the ruins: Despite Sandy, wedding is on

    John Makely / NBC News

James Keane, a volunteer with the Rockaway Point F.D and a full-time dispatcher for the FDNY, and his fiancee Kristen Diffendale on Sunday in Breezy Point.

    By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. -- The wedding had been two years in the making: The church was booked, the custom fuchsia and blue Converse sneakers for the bridesmaids were ordered, and the firehouse was secured as a staging ground for the groomsmen.

But then superstorm Sandy struck, flooding the firehouse, forcing the church to turn into a command center, and scattering the guests and the newlyweds-to-be, as well as the custom Converse, less than a month before the big day: Friday, Nov. 23.

Now, with much of their Breezy Point community in ruins, Kristen Diffendale, 29,?and James Keane, 28,?are turning their wedding into a celebration of what the storm couldn?t take away.

?All of our family and friends are from Breezy Point and from Rockaway (another hard hit community nearby) so we figured this is, it?s not only a night for us, it?s a night for all of our friends and family to get to some sort of normalcy, to feel like everything?s alright, to be away from this for a day,? she said. ?We want to give that to our friends, just a night of just absolute back to normal.?

As Sandy swept through the seaside community of Breezy Point Oct. 29, Diffendale hunkered down at the home she shares with her future in-laws and her three-year-old daughter, Madison Shea. Keane, her fianc? and Madison?s dad, was in Brooklyn working as a dispatcher for the New York City Fire Department.

'What Thanksgiving is all about': Breezy Point teen lifts spirits in devastated hometown

?It was pretty scary ? I was a little worried when the water came up we just, we didn?t know where it was coming from and we figured out it was the ocean that was coming towards us,? she said.??And then we saw the fire, we saw the glow ? and then I started to get really nervous because it wasn?t stopping.?

    'I thought everybody was gone'
Keane lost cellphone contact with his family around 7 p.m. that night. He got permission to leave his job and raced to a firehouse close to his home. But due to the flooding, no fire trucks were being allowed into the area in southern Queens where Breezy Point is located.

When that order lifted, and he was finally able to get on a truck speeding to the area, he spotted the fires lighting up the night sky.

    John Makely / NBC News

James Keane and his fiancee, Kristen Diffendale, hope their wedding will provide respite for their guests.

?I didn?t know what was happening down here. I thought it was gone down here,? he said this week,?standing amid volunteers and victims near the relief center in their once idyllic community.?

?He thought I left him,? Diffendale said, looking into his eyes, breaking from the couple?s otherwise jovial banter.

?I thought everybody was gone,? Keane said.

Their home took in several feet of water in the basement and there was damage to the roof, but the dwelling did not burn. The family, however, spent a frightful night riding out the storm, with Dipphendale clutching her grandmother's rosary and in tears.?

Once Keane, a volunteer firefighter at the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department, learned his family was all right, he?joined the effort to battle the blaze.

Diffendale and Keane are among the lucky ones in Breezy Point, where Sandy?s hurricane-force winds sparked a six-alarm blaze that burned more than 100 homes to the ground. It is believed that the rest of the 2,100 homes in this close-knit community were also damaged, many because of flooding.

PhotoBlog: Cooking a Thanksgiving feast in Breezy Point

The couple was unsure about keeping their post-Thanksgiving wedding date in the aftermath of the disaster. Like many of their friends and neighbors, they have been busy with the relief effort: he, cleaning and gutting basements, and she, hauling supplies to victims.

?For a while, people were asking, ?What about the wedding??? said Diffendale, who works in special education. ?But we were, like, ?We?re worrying about what?s going on right now.' ? We put ourselves last for a couple of weeks.?

But as the date approached, and more people asked them not to postpone their impending nuptials, the couple decided the community needed a party.

?We?ve been planning this wedding for two years and we had to re-plan it in two weeks,? Keane said.

    Mario Tama / Getty Images

Residents of the Northeast are still picking up the pieces after Superstorm Sandy.

'People need a break from this'
The change in plans entailed: moving their wedding to a hall in Long Island and getting permission from church leaders at Saint Frances de Sales Parish to still have their marriage recognized by the church; booking rooms at a local hotel for Keane and the groomsmen because the firehouse was out of commission; and arranging for buses to transport many of the 300 guests to the wedding, since so many were forced to relocate.

Diffendale said they weren?t ?stressing the little stuff anymore,? and her only near-Bridezilla experience came while tracking down the special-made sneakers, which have the wedding date inscribed on them. The mail delivery was interrupted by?the storm and because the shoes were in different packages, they ended up in different locations. Diffendale was told the shoes would be delivered Nov. 28, after the wedding, but a shipping agent helped her track them down.

Read more coverage of Breezy Point on NBCNews.com

?People need a break from this,? Keane said of the weeks-long cleanup and repair in chilly temperatures. ?They need a break from doing this every day.?

The wedding has taken on new meaning for the couple, too.

?Absolutely,? Diffendale said. ?We thought each other were dead.?

?You thought you had, I don?t know, nothing," Keane said. "I didn?t even know there was even a neighborhood here anymore ... when I came down."

Despite the disaster that befell their neighborhood, they don?t expect a sullen affair.

?We?re an Irish neighborhood so we know how to have a good time,? Diffendale said, laughing. ?It?s going to be a very good time.?
