'Indian football needs to develop with a young set of boys'

The players?heard about him but had never seen him in person. So when Wim Koevermans met India's [ Images ] under-22 boys for the first time at a practice session in Muscat, it was a special moment for them.

A day later, Koevermans, India new senior football team coach,?and its technical director Rob Baan spoke about India's performance against the United Arab Emirates [ Images ], the coaching philosophy, discipline and a lot more.

You watched India take on the United Arab Emirates in the U-22 AFC championship. What's your impression?

Koevermans: I am quite pleased with the manner things were conducted on the pitch. Obviously, there are areas of improvement. But one needs to remember that the performance came against a strong nation as the United Arab Emirates.? We had our moments on the field and could have won it. There were some elements which are very promising indeed.

Rob Baan: It was heartening to see that the boys were focused all throughou. They were passionate to play for their country, though I must admit that the passion, at times, was disturbing the tactics a bit.

Wim KoevermansWhat was your perception of Indian football prior to taking over?

Koevermans: There were some similarities in the style of play with Ireland, the last nation I worked in. But, at the international level, the game has changed vastly and we need to implement the same to keep ourselves updated.

We need to get accustomed fast and try to develop with a young set of boys.

It was only 16 days of practice that the Under-22 squad had under Arthur Papas prior to coming over to Oman. Are you impressed with the manner the boys have settled down to the new style of play?

Koevermans: The new style and discipline will take time. There will have to be changes and it always takes time. So we just can't afford to hurry at the moment. Let's be patient and the difference will be evident.

You will?officially take charge from July 1 and the Nehru Cup will be your first assignment. What are?your plans?for the Nehru Cup?

Koevermans: It's too early to comment on that at the moment. I have some meeting lined up in the first week of July and only after that will I be in a position to dish it out.

In such a championship, how much of a role does discipline play off the field?

Baan: It's an unbreakable part. There can be no success without discipline. Look at the Dutch squad as an example. The players need to listen, take proper rest, sleep?at the right time and have a common goal. Only then can you think of success. If you don't have the discipline, the results will be damaging.

What the Atkins diet does is to put your body in a state that is known as ketosis because you are reducing the amount of carbohydrates that you?re eating so drastically that your body begins burning fat for fuel. Does it work? It absolutely works and it can help you lose weight very quickly. Unfortunately, ketosis also uses some of your organs for fuel as well. After all, ketosis is something that diabetics try to avoid for their very life. Putting your body into this state is definitely not healthy.

Another type of diet that is very popular is low-fat diets.

These tend to cut all of the fats out of our diet because of the assumption that if we eat fat, we get fat. It certainly is true that many of the fats that we eat are bad for us and some of them are outright atrocious. You might be surprised to learn, however, that some fat in our diet is absolutely essential for digestion and health. In addition, there are some good fats that we can use in order to lose weight. Do you want to eat a healthy fat that will take weight off your body naturally? Try eating a couple of spoonfuls of raw, organic coconut oil on a daily basis. It may seem odd, but it works.

Instead of falling for every fad diet that is out there, you should simply try eating a healthy, balanced diet and get a little bit of exercise. As you begin to see results from this way of living, you will discover a truth that many dieters never learn. It?s not about fad diets, prepackaged foods or going to extremes.

Research has shown that the best thing you can do to lose weight is to join a group of other people who have the same problem and share the same goal. Harvard University have proved that weight loss is easy when you are surrounded by a support group of like minded people.

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) ? David Mathis had a hole-in-one and shot a 6-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Travelers Championship.

The 38-year-old Mathis, who missed the cut last week in the U.S. Open, began play on the back nine, making a birdie on 10 before holing out from 158 yards shot on the par-3 11th hole. He was 6 under after six holes.

Nathan Green, Will Claxton and defending champion Fredrik Jacobson shot 65 on a day that saw temperatures soar into the upper 90s.

U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Masters winner Bubba Watson played together and finished in a group of 10 at 66. The third member of the threesome, PGA champion Keegan Bradley, shot a 68.

"We were relaxed all day," Simpson said. "Bubba is my Presidents Cup partner. We always laugh together. And I've played a lot of golf with Keegan this year. He's a good friend. We had a lot of fun feeding off each other, and luckily, we all played well."

Mathis' ace was the shot of the day. He said he was just trying to cut a 9-iron close to the pin and it hit exactly where he aimed, bounced right and into the hole.

"It was an awesome start," he said. "I was hitting a lot of great shots (later), and I guess it felt like a lull compared to how I started."

Green teed off at 6:50 a.m., well before heat and humidity set in, setting the early mark with a 65. Claxton opened his round with a birdie and an eagle, but finished with a bogey on 18.

"To start out birdie-eagle, that's huge," Claxton said. "I obviously had the driver going. I drove the ball well today. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it might be."

Jacobson, who picked up his only PGA Tour win at the event a year ago, spent much of the day atop the leaderboard before a double bogey on 16 dropped him to 5 under and into a three-way tie for second.

"I knew it was going to be challenging in this heat, and if you start to miss a few shots, it can get to you," he said. "So I was just happy to get through this day."

One of Jacobson's playing partner's, former Masters champion Zach Johnson, also had a tough finish. He was 3 under when he hit a drive over the green at 15. He made a 6 there and a seven on the par-4 17th, where he tried to putt from the fringe, and needed three more after making it to the green.

A gallery of fans five and six deep greeted Simpson, Watson, and Bradley on the first tee, and many followed them throughout what all three said was a relaxed round.

"Any time you can play with those guys, it's fun," Watson said. "We learn from each other. We watch each other. We're making some jokes out there. We were having a good time. It was good."

But it wasn't fun for everybody. Former UCLA star Patrick Cantlay made his professional debut with a 75 on the same course where he made headlines last year with a second-round 60 as a 19-year-old amateur.

"I started off poorly with a couple of doubles and couple weird things happened, and it just added up to a bad round," Cantlay said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Speaker John Boehner demanded Thursday that the Obama administration give in and turn over documents related to a botched gun-tracking operation, insisting that's the only way to stop a House vote to hold the attorney general in contempt.

Boehner took a hard line against the Obama administration and Attorney General Eric Holder despite a willingness by House Republicans and Holder to negotiate a settlement before the matter becomes a constitutional crisis. The president has invoked executive privilege, a legal principle used to avoid disclosure of internal presidential documents.

While a confrontation between the legislative and executive branches of government would be an academic dispute to most voters, Boehner on Thursday injected a human element into the dispute over documents related to Operation Fast and Furious. He said the family of slain border agent Brian Terry deserved answers about the guns that killed him.

Two guns that were allowed to "walk" from Arizona to Mexico in the failed effort to track weapons were found near Terry after he was killed.

"The Terry family deserves answers about why their son was killed as a result of an operation run by the United States government," Boehner told his weekly news conference.

During the year and a half investigation by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the Justice Department turned over 7,600 documents about details of Operation Fast and Furious. But because the department initially denied and then admitted it used a risky investigative technique known as "gun-walking," the committee has turned its attention to how the Justice Department responded to the investigation. The additional documents it seeks are about that topic.

Agents of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona abandoned the agency's usual practice of intercepting all weapons they believed to be illicitly purchased. Instead, the goal of gun-walking was to track such weapons to high-level arms traffickers who had long eluded prosecution and to dismantle their networks.

Gun-walking has long been barred by Justice Department policy, but federal agents in Arizona experimented with it in at least two investigations during the George W. Bush administration before Fast and Furious. These experiments came as the department was under widespread criticism that the old policy of arresting every suspected low-level "straw purchaser" was still allowing tens of thousands of guns to reach Mexico. A straw purchaser is an illicit buyer of guns for others.

The agents in Arizona lost track of several hundred weapons in Operation Fast and Furious.

Boehner renewed his allegation that President Barack Obama's decision to assert executive privilege to withhold the documents "is an admission the White House officials were involved in the decision that misled the Congress and covered up the truth." In fact, historically, several presidents have invoked executive privilege over Cabinet department documents that did not directly involve White House officials.

House Democrats gave no ground. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California accused Republicans of pursuing Holder to retaliate against his effort to stop suppression of voters in the upcoming elections. "I'm telling you, this is connected," she told reporters.

Holder, in Copenhagen, Denmark, for meetings with European Union officials, said the administration had given the committee a proposal to negotiate an end to the conflict.

"I think the possibility still exists that it can happen in that way," Holder said. "The proposal that we have made is still there. The House, I think, the House leadership, has to consider now what they will do, so we'll see how it works out."

But he called the contempt vote "unwarranted, unnecessary and unprecedented."

White House press secretary Jay Carney said there was "absolutely" no cover-up on the Fast and Furious controversy. He said executive privilege was asserted only on internal deliberations and "that is separate from trying to find out the truth about this operation."

House Oversight Committee officials who would conduct any negotiations on behalf of Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., said they are looking for at least some additional documents ? plus some "signs of good faith."

The latter could include substantive responses to future committee requests for documents; reforming the approval process for wiretap applications; acknowledging mistakes in misleading Congress about Fast and Furious; taking whistle-blowers seriously; and producing a log of documents to be turned over, according to the officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the issue by name. Committee officials said the department only gave cursory scrutiny to wiretap applications against Fast and Furious targets.

Democrats contended that the 23-17 party-line contempt vote in committee Wednesday was just political theater. The committee's top Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, called the vote "an extreme, virtually unprecedented action based on election-year politics rather than fact."

Holder offered to give lawmakers a briefing on the withheld documents but insisted that this action satisfy Issa's subpoena for the records and negate the need for a contempt vote. Issa rejected the offer, saying it was an attempt to force an end to the committee's investigation.

Boehner on Thursday rejected Holder's approach.

"The negotiation that was proposed by the attorney general is, we should accept some documents of his choosing and, as a result of him turning over some documents of his choosing, that we would never ever pursue contempt," Boehner said. "Now this is not hardly a rational basis for a negotiation, nor is it a reasonable attempt at turning over the documents we've been asking for."

Do you ever tire of hearing that a Hollywood remake is in the pipeline, when the ink has hardly dried on the original script? Like "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "Cell 211" and "Let The Right One In" before it, this is another that has had the green light for an English language version. It's easy to see why there would be interest in this as it's an exceptionally good thriller. I just don't see why it's necessary to have it redone. Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) is a high-flying businessman who works as a headhunter. He scouts potential applicants for executive jobs. While interviewing them, he learns very useful information that leads him to his second source of income: a sideline in executing valuable art robberies. His extravagant and expensive lifestyle can't be funded by his headhunting job alone. One particular interviewee is Clas Greve (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau). He has all the credentials for a post that Brown needs to fill but he also has just inherited a piece of art that will cure all of Brown's financial woes - if he can just get his hands on it. As it turns out though, this art theft is not as simple as his previous ones and Greve is not as buttoned up as he makes out. As this film opens we are introduced to unlikely leading actor Aksel Hennie who has an appearance that resembles the love child of Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi. He's not your average leading man and his character is not that appealing either. He's a self-centred weasel of a man that seems to lack any morals but you know that things are, not entirely, going to go to plan for this scheming, double-crossing thief and that's exactly what captures your attention and provides the hook in this adaptation of Norwegian writer Jo Nesbo's novel. Director Morten Tyldum is wise enough to play his cards when he needs them and wrings out the suspense, masterfully, at every turn. He mounts the tension slowly before staging one gripping scene after another. The unpredictability of the spiralling plot delivers genuine excitement, helped immeasurably by natural characters and performers. Hennie in particular, is absolutely brilliant and will no doubt become a household name after this (apparently he already is, in his native Norway). Kudos to screenwriters Lars Gudmstead and Ulf Ryberg. It's their tight, deliberately paced and unpredictable script that keeps you guessing and shows a good level of intelligence. Admittedly, I haven't read the novel but if I were author Jo Nesbo, I'd be very proud of the job that has been done here. When the headhunter becomes the headhunted, this film grips like a vice and refuses to let go. I've seen quite a few film's from Scandinavia over recent years and have been very impressed with the high standard they are delivering. This is no exception and a thriller that will definitely compete with the best of the year.

Carcinogens linked to cancer stem cells, but spinach can help

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? Researchers at Oregon State University have for the first time traced the actions of a known carcinogen in cooked meat to its complex biological effects on microRNA and cancer stem cells.

The findings are part of a growing awareness of the role of epigenetics in cancer, or the ways in which gene expression and cell behavior can be changed even though DNA sequence information is unaltered.

The scientists also found that consumption of spinach can partially offset the damaging effects of the carcinogen. In tests with laboratory animals, it cut the incidence of colon tumors almost in half, from 58 percent to 32 percent.

The research at OSU's Linus Pauling Institute was recently reported in the journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, in work supported by the National Institutes of Health.

"Cancer development is a complex, multi-step process, with damaged cells arising through various means," said Mansi Parasramka, a postdoctoral scholar with LPI. "This study showed that alterations of microRNAs affect cancer stem cell markers in colon cancer formation.

"MicroRNAs are very small factors that do very big things in cells," she said.

Traditionally, cancer was thought to be caused by changes in DNA sequence, or mutations, that allowed for uncontrolled cell growth. That's still true. However, there's also increasing interest in the role played by epigenetics, in which such factors as diet, environmental toxins, and lifestyle affect the expression of genes -- not just in cancer, but also cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurological disorders.

Included in this epigenetic equation is the formation of microRNAs -- once thought to be "junk DNA" -- which researchers were at a loss to understand. It's now known that they influence which areas of DNA get expressed or silenced.

There are hundreds of microRNAs, and the OSU scientists monitored 679 in their experiments. When they don't work right, bad things can happen, including abnormal gene expression leading to cancer.

"Recent research is showing that microRNAs are one of the key epigenetic mechanisms regulating cellular functions in normal and diseased tissues," said Rod Dashwood, the Helen P. Rumbel Professor for Cancer Prevention and director of LPI's Cancer Chemoprotection Program.

"But unlike mutations which are permanent genetic changes in DNA," he said, "the good news about epigenetics and microRNA alterations is that we may be able to restore normal cell function, via diet and healthy life style choices, or even drug treatments."

Epigenetics essentially makes every person biologically unique, Dashwood said, a product of both their genetics and their environment. That includes even identical twins.

The findings of the new study should lead to advances in understanding microRNAs, their effects on cancer stem cells, and the regulatory processes disrupted in disease development, the OSU scientists said. This might lead one day to tailored or "patient specific" therapies for cancer, Dashwood said.

News: Sony Details the Advantages of Vita and PS3 Connectivity

Now that Nintendo has officially revealed the Wii U to the world, all three platform holders are jumping on board dual-screen technology. During its E3 press conference, Microsoft announced Smart Glass ? a feature that will allow players to interact with the Xbox 360 using a tablet computer. Meanwhile, Sony has focused on the interaction between PS3 and Vita.

While this functionality didn?t exactly headline the company?s E3 line-up, the platform holder was running a rather interesting demo of LittleBigPlanet 2 being played with Vita controls in a shadowy corner of its booth.

In that demo, the game was able to take advantage of both the processing power of the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 3 ? something Sony executive Scott Rohde believes is an advantage over the Wii U.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, he said:

That Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fuelled by that box sitting under your TV.

We can do some pretty special things that you'll start to see on the [E3] floor this year and you'll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that's in your hand as well.

Of course, the big caveat that Rohde?s not addressing is that ? unlike the Wii U gamepad ? the Vita is an expensive unit on its own. For significant resources to be put into Vita to PS3 cross-controller connectivity, developers will need to ensure that a substantial number of consumers own both devices, and that?s unlikely.
