Wagner College men's team knocks off Penn in overtime, 68-63 (photo gallery)

Point guard Kenny Ortiz was explaining why his Wagner team continues playing ? and winning ? overtime games at Spiro Center, Saturday?s 68-63 victory over Penn being the Wagner?s third in three home games this season.
???
?We just like to give the home crowd some entertainment,? the junior declared with a broad smile after scoring a career-high 23 points in the Seahawks? fourth win in their last five games.
???

?We refuse to lose,? the 5-foot-11 Southern Mississippi ?transfer went on after scoring Wagner?s final eight points as the team improved to 6-5. ?In the overtime, I saw they were having trouble keeping me out of the lane and I just went for it.?
???
Wagner has also defeated Princeton and Coppin State so far this season in overtime.
???
?Sometimes we make things harder than we have to,? coach Bashir Mason said after Ortiz made six consecutive free throws over the final 19 seconds to ice the game. ?But we have a gritty group of guys, and going to overtime doesn?t worry me.?
???
Latif Rivers, last year?s team high scorer, returned from an eight-game injury absence to score 15 points including three 3-point baskets in regulation and a clutch running bank shot with 2:40 left in overtime.
???
Senior star Jonathon Williams did not suit up. The 6-5 senior, who leads the Seahawks this year in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (7.7 rpg), has been hampered by what has been diagnosed as a hip flexor by the Wagner medical staff.
???
Missing Williams, made Rivers? return all the more important.
???
?Having him back makes everyone more comfortable,? said Mason. ?When Latif is out there, I feel like I have a guy who can make a perimeter shot when we need one.?
???
Rivers, who was 3 of 5 from 3-point range, missed a corner jumper with 40 seconds left in regulation, but an Orlando Parker rebound and the forward?s converting of 1 of 2 free throws tied the score at 54-54.
???
Overtime came after Penn?s Miles Cartwright (19 points) missed a buzzer jump shot for the win.
???
Wagner, which opens its Northeast Conference schedule at home on Thursday against Monmouth, won the overtime tap and scored on a Mario Moody jam off a pretty drive-and-kick from Ortiz, who finished with six assists.
???
Then Ortiz, last season?s NEC defensive player of the year, stole the ball in the paint at the other end and found Josh Thompson for a run-out fast-break basket and a 58-54 lead.
???
?That was critical,? said Mason. ?To open overtime with a basket, a stop, and another basket, is a huge edge. It?s only four points, but it?s a big four points.?
???
Rivers? key basket on a fade-away bank shot came moments later.
???
And Ortiz, who led the Seahawks with 10 rebounds, scored on a huge put-back in traffic for a 62-58 Wagner lead with 1:13 to go.
???
?Kenny managed the game in the second half the way I?ve seen him do it in the past,? Mason said of his point guard?s 16 points post-first half performance. ?He didn?t start off the game great, and I pulled him just to try and hit the reset button a little. But he and the rest of the guys really stepped up when they had to.?
???
Wagner trailed 31-29 at halftime.
???
According to Ortiz, some of his big day was attributable to the return of his backcourt mate Rivers.
???
?It?s an easier game for me when he?s out there,? Ortiz said. ?I know if I drive and find Latif for a kick-out it?s like an automatic basket waiting to happen.?
???
Penn was without the services of team high scorer Fran Dougherty. The 6-8 Dougherty, who is averaging 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, both team highs, was diagnosed with mononucleosis earlier this week.
???
Wagner trailed 22-13 in the opening minutes, before a pair of Rivers 3-pointers ignited a 12-4 Seahawk run. The junior had been out since Nov. 18, when he played in Wagner?s 88-57 loss at Syracuse.
???
He played 28 minutes Saturday.
???
?The knee didn?t bother me,? he insisted. ?I feel like I?m making progress, coming back. But you have to play in live games, you can?t simulate that.?
???
Rivers will sit out the Monmouth game due to a one-game NEC-imposed suspension for a scrap at the end of Wagner?s final game last year, a 71-64 loss to Robert Morris in the semis of the conference tournament. ?

NOTES: Sophomore Moody (6 points, 6 rebounds) got his first career start ... Rivers has already amassed 898 points in his career ... The Seahawks turned the ball over 19 times. ?

92 shorebirds killed by vehicle on Wash. beach

A flock of dunlin stand on a Washington state beach in 1990.

By NBC News staff

Nearly 100 shorebirds were killed when a vehicle was driven into a flock on a beach in southwest Washington state, NBC station KING of Seattle reported.

Wildlife officers and sheriff's deputies who were called to the scene Thursday afternoon found 92 dunlin dead on Long Beach.?The Wildlife Center of the North Coast said the trauma was consistent with a collision with a motor vehicle, KING reported.

Seabirds and shorebirds are protected by law. Wildlife officers have shown that a vehicle must be traveling much faster than the posted 25-mph speed limit on the beach in order to hit these types of birds, KING said.

The dunlin is a type of sandpiper known for large flocks that exhibit swift, synchronized flights and can hit speeds up to 110 mph, ?according to the Audubon Society website.?

A $500 reward was offered by Wildlife Center of the North Coast for information leading to the person who hit the birds. Information can be reported to Sgt. Dan Chadwick of the state Fish and Wildlife police at 360-581-3337, KING said.?

New Years Resolutions for your Relationship. | The Marriage and ...

New Years is a great time to look back over the previous year and make an inventory. Make an inventory of all the things you've done right so you know to keep doing them. And make an inventory of things you've done not-so-right that you'd like to improve on. This is one of the greatest things about New Years: the opportunity to let bygones be bygones and to start anew on things you wish you could.

One thing, though, that people don't often think about when they're making New Years resolutions is things they'd like to fix in their relationship with their significant other. Every relationship has its' ups and downs. This doesn't mean that it's a bad relationship. But it does mean there's room for improvement. Even if your relationship isn't under a lot of stress or if you feel your relationship is doing just fine, here are a few relationship resolutions for you to consider that will help improve your relationship. After all, what harm could a little improvement do in your relationship?

New Years Resolutions for Your Relationship

1) A little less talk and a lot more action. Every couple talks to each other about things they'd like to do more. They'd like to get tickets to the music hall or go to their favorite lake more. Forget about talking about them. Pick one or two of the easiest or most important things and actually do them. Make it a priority this year.

2) Spend more time together.?When you look back on your life, you probably won't say that you wished you spent more time at work. You'll probably say that you wished you spent more time with your loved ones. Don't risk looking back with that regret. Start this year off right and make a resolution to spend more time together.?

3) Make more memories. In a previous post about holiday gifts your lover will love I wrote about how I am a fan of giving memories for gifts instead of giving things you can buy from a store. This year, make a resolution to make more memories together. Take that vacation you always wanted or do that project on the house together. Whatever you do, make sure it makes memories.?
4) Fight less. This is one most couples want to do anyway. Every couple has one thing that they perpetually argue about: in-laws, children, money, etc. You've argued about ever since you two were together and you haven't fixed it yet. It's likely that you won't resolve it anytime soon, either. Instead of arguing about it over and over again talk with your spouse about how you can both handle the conversation next time it comes up. This will help you to fight less about it and begin the year talking about the difficulty in a positive way.

Remember, New Years resolutions are meant to point you in new directions and create new possibilities. The same can happen with your relationship. Make a resolution to focus on your relationship more this year and who knows what direction you'll be pointed in next year.?

(AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport and partly onto a highway while landing on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing at least four people.

Officials said there were eight people aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings that was flying back from the Czech Republic without passengers to its home at Vnukovo Airport.

Emergency officials said in a televised news conference that four people were killed and another four severely injured when the plane rolled off the runway into a snowy field and partly onto an adjacent highway, then disintegrated. No collisions with vehicles on the major, multilane highway were reported.

The plane's cockpit area was sheared off from the fuselage and the tail section partly torn away.

The crash occurred amid snow and winds gusting up to 15 meters a second (30 mph), but other details were not immediately known. A spokesman for Russia's top investigative agency, Vladimir Markin, said initial indications were that pilot error was the cause.

The state news agency RIA Novosti cited an unidentified official at the Russian Aviation Agency as saying another Red Wings Tu-204 had gone off the runway at the international airport in Novosibirsk in Siberia on Dec. 20. The agency said that incident, in which no one was injured, was due to the failure of the plane's engines to go into reverse upon landing and that its brake system malfunctioned.

On Friday, the Aviation Agency sent a directive to the Tupolev company's president calling for it to take urgent preventive measures.

The plane that crashed Saturday took off from Pardubice airport in the Czech Republic. Jan Anderlik, the director of the company that operates the airport, told Czech public television that the plane underwent a regular technical check before takeoff and no problems were discovered.

Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.

The Red Wings airline is one of the holdings of Russian billionaire Alexander Lebedev, who also owns the British newspapers The Independent and the Evening Standard.

Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports.

At least 15 killed in sect attack in north Nigeria

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Witnesses say at least 15 people were killed when gunmen suspected to belong to a radical Islamist sect attacked a village in northeastern Nigeria.

The attack happened early Friday morning in the village of Musari on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the city where the sect known as Boko Haram launched its violent campaign against western education. Mshelia Inusa, a primary school teacher in the village, said he heard gunmen call out for people to be slaughtered.

Inusa said he later saw dead bodies with their throats slit and their hands tied behind their back. A guard at a Maiduguri hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he feared reprisals from the sect and the government, said he saw at least 15 bodies deposited in the morgue after the assault.

White House meeting a last stab at a fiscal deal

(AP) ? Amid partisan bluster, top members of Congress and President Barack Obama were holding out slim hopes for a limited fiscal deal before the new year. But even as congressional leaders prepared to convene at the White House, there were no signs that legislation palatable to both sides was taking shape.

The Friday afternoon meeting among congressional leaders and the president ? their first since Nov. 16 ? stood as a make-or-break moment for negotiations to avoid across-the-board first of the year tax increases and deep spending cuts.

Obama called for the meeting as top lawmakers alternately cast blame on each other while portraying themselves as open to a reasonable last-minute bargain.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid all but conceded that any effort at this late date was a long shot. "I don't know timewise how it can happen now," he said.

For Obama, the 11th-hour scramble represented a test of how he would balance the strength derived from his re-election with his avowed commitment to compromise. Despite early talk of a grand bargain between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner that would reduce deficits by more than $2 trillion, the expectations were now far less ambitious.

Although there were no guarantees of a deal, Republicans and Democrats said privately that any agreement would likely include an extension of middle-class tax cuts with increased rates at upper incomes, an Obama priority that was central to his re-election campaign. The deal would also likely put off the scheduled spending cuts. Such a year-end bill could also include an extension of expiring unemployment benefits, a reprieve for doctors who face a cut in Medicare payments and possibly a short-term measure to prevent dairy prices from soaring, officials said.

To get there, Obama and Reid would have to propose a package that Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell would agree not to block with procedural steps that require 60 votes to overcome.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York said he still thinks a deal could be struck.

The Democrat told NBC's "Today" show Friday that he believes the "odds are better than people think."

Schumer said he based his optimism on indications that McConnell has gotten "actively engaged" in the talks.

Appearing on the same show, Republican Sen. John Thune noted the meeting scheduled later Friday at the White House, saying "it's encouraging that people are talking."

But Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., predicted that "the worst-case scenario" could emerge from Friday's talks.

"We will kick the can down the road," he said on "CBS This Morning."

"We'll do some small deal and we'll create another fiscal cliff to deal with the fiscal cliff," he said. Corker complained that there has been "a total lack of courage, lack of leadership," in Washington.

Speaking on the Senate floor Thursday, McConnell cautioned: "Republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything the Democrats put forward just because we find ourselves at the edge of the cliff."

Nevertheless, he said he told Obama in a phone call late Wednesday that "we're all happy to look at whatever he proposes."

If a deal were to pass the Senate, Boehner would have to agree to take it to the floor in the Republican-controlled House.

Boehner discussed the fiscal cliff with Republican members in a conference call Thursday and advised them that the House would convene Sunday evening. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., an ally of the speaker, said Boehner told the lawmakers that "he didn't really intend to put on the floor something that would pass with all the Democratic votes and few of the Republican votes."

But Cole did not rule out Republican support for some increase in tax rates, noting that Boehner had amassed about 200 Republican votes for a plan last week to raise rates on Americans earning $1 million or more. Boehner ultimately did not put the plan to a House floor vote in the face of opposition from Republican conservatives and a unified Democratic caucus.

"The ultimate question is whether the Republican leaders in the House and Senate are going to push us over the cliff by blocking plans to extend tax cuts for the middle class," White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer said. "Ironically, in order to protect tax breaks for millionaires, they will be responsible for the largest tax increase in history."

Boehner, McConnell, Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi are all scheduled to attend Friday's White House meeting with Obama. Vice President Joe Biden will also participate in the meeting, the White House said.

Despite the urgency to act, the rhetoric Thursday was quarrelsome and personal.

The House of Representatives is "being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker," Reid said on the Senate floor. He attributed Boehner's reluctance to put a version of Senate bill that raised tax rates on incomes above $250,000 for couples to fears he could lose his re-election as speaker next week.

"Harry Reid should talk less and legislate more if he wants to avert the fiscal cliff," countered Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Boehner.

If a deal is not possible, it should become evident at Friday's White House meeting. If that occurs, Obama and the leaders would leave the resolution to the next Congress to address in January.

Such a delay could unnerve the stock market, which performed erratically Thursday amid the developments in Washington. Economists say that if the tax increases are allowed to hit most Americans and if the spending cuts aren't scaled back, the recovering but fragile economy could sustain a traumatizing shock.

But a sentiment is taking hold that despite a black eye to its image, Congress could weather the fiscal cliff without significant economic consequences if it acts decisively next month.

"Going over is likely because at this point both sides probably see a better deal on the other side of the cliff," Jared Bernstein, Biden's former economic adviser, wrote in a blog post Thursday.

By letting current tax cuts expire and rise, Bernstein and others say, Republicans would be voting to lower taxes next month, even if not for all taxpayers. Democrats ? and Obama ? would be in a stronger position to demand that taxpayers above the $250,000 threshold pay higher taxes, instead of the $400,000 threshold that Obama proposed in his latest offer to Boehner.

And the debate over spending cuts, including changes to politically sensitive entitlement programs such as Medicare, would have to start anew.

Samsung expands Silicon Valley crib with 11 million square foot R&D center

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the most extravagant flashy lifestyle, the deluxe villa, the fly palace of Samsung Semiconductor Inc. It only exists as a pile of architects' drawings right now, and probably looks nothing like the Minecraft wonderment shown above, but when it's finished the 10-story San Jose structure will boast the following:

  • A new sales and R&D center, built in the stead of some existing Samsung offices, with floor space totaling 1.1 million square feet.
  • A layout that seeks to "encourage interaction among staff" and "foster connections with the community," while ultimately improving Sammy's "soft capabilities"
  • A parking garage and an "amenity pavilion" (whatever that is, we just know we can't afford one)

So, that's pretty much it in terms of detail. But to put all this into perspective, we're talking about an HQ that will be slightly bigger than Apple's recent 3,600-worker expansion in Austin, Texas -- or around a third the size of an infinite loop.

Returing

Hey everyone. I'm back. Don't know if I was missed but after a hiatus I'm returning to my roots of where I began to love writing, through roleplaying. I know im not the best at spelling on the fly as well as grammar, but its my passion. I missed this place but it's changed so much. Play-by-post is my favorite but it seems all the casual roleplayers have moved on to the Tab version of roleplay. I tried to find a play-by-post that wasn't too complicated. Meaning low character counts and quick smaller replies. I hope somewhere out there is a roleplay I can connect with. If you know of any I would be excited. Thanks for taking me back. It's good to be back.

Russia parliament passes anti-US adoption bill - World News

Alexander Zemlianichenko / AP

A protester argues with police officers outside the Federation Council in Moscow on Wednesday. The poster held by the protester reads: "Children get frozen in the Cold War."

By Reuters

MOSCOW --?Russia's upper house of parliament approved a bill on Wednesday that would prohibit Americans from adopting Russian children and impose other measures in retaliation for a U.S. law designed to punish Russians accused of human rights violations.?

The bill would also outlaw some U.S.-funded non-governmental organizations and impose visa bans and asset freezes on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians abroad.?

The bill was endorsed by the lower house last week and is now expected to be sent to President Vladimir Putin to sign.

Putin hasn't committed to signing the bill, but referred to it as a legitimate response to the new U.S. law.

It is one part of a larger measure by angry lawmakers retaliating against a recently signed U.S. law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators.?

The U.S. law is primarily intended to end Cold War-era trade restrictions and was hailed by U.S. businesses worried about falling behind in the race to win shares of Russia's more open market, but its human rights part has outraged Putin's government.

Dubbed the Magnitsky act, the U.S. legislation is named for Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested by officials he accused of a $230-million tax fraud.

He?was repeatedly denied medical treatment and in 2009 died after almost a year in jail after being severely beaten by guards.

Opportunity denied
Some top Russian officials, including the foreign minister, have spoken flatly against the Russian bill, arguing that the measure would be in violation with Russia's constitution and international obligations.

Earlier Wednesday, several protesters were detained outside the upper house as it prepared to make its decision.

Boy's Christmas wish: Adoption of little brother caught in US-Russia spat

"Children get frozen in the Cold War," one poster read.

Critics of the bill say it victimizes orphans by depriving them of an opportunity to escape often-dismal Russian orphanages.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims the U.S. is "poisoning ties" between the two countries with a law that bans Russians who abuse human rights and is backing a Russian draft law banning adoption by Americans. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Americans may lose right to adopt Russian kids

There are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, according to UNICEF. More than 60,000 Russian children have been adopted in the United States in the past 20 years.

The Russian bill is named in honor of Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler who was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours.

See the US Action Plan on Children in Adversity

The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Russian lawmakers argue that by banning adoptions to the U.S. they would be protecting children and encouraging adoptions inside Russia.

Russian children?s rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov told the Interfax news agency that 46 children who were about to be adopted by U.S. citizens would stay in Russia ? despite court rulings in some of these cases authorizing the adoptions.

Astakhov also insisted that all adoptions would be halted once the bill is signed by Putin, but a senior lawmaker at the Federation Council insisted it cannot be enacted immediately.

Mikhail Margelov, chairman of the Council's foreign affairs committee, said that a bilateral Russian-U.S. agreement binds Russia to notify of a halt in adoptions 12 months in advance.

Critical Review

An article review of Yunfei? Chong ,2011.? ? The Research on how Chinese vocational education break through the current bottleneck of its development , Concurrent discussion on how to establish the mechanism of school enterprise cooperation in Chinese vocational education?. ????Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College

This article focuses on ?how to develop Chinese Vocational Education by establish the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation . The authors have stressed the cooperation between schools and enterprises that appear to have a problem in creating a program of bilateral cooperation which respectively provide help to achieve a common goal or a win-win due to? the failure of the government to encourage partnerships between schools and enterprises.; government-lead ?. The author aims to highlight the collaboration between industry and academia like ?Dual System?? vocational education models in Germany that provide job internship ,one of the reason for difficulty of school-enterprises cooperation; administrative subordination;. Yunfei mentions that perhaps almost vocational colleges perfom actively, but it not accompany with enterprise or industry that did not contact the colleges forwardly.

This article is significant given that the difficulties of school-enterprise cooperation is lack of talent training as well as evaluated by educational expert. ?However as a result of somewhat abstract implications, the article would perhaps only be of interest on ?co-sponsorship mechanism and policy guarantee especially on government-lead.? The authors have used ?vocational education models to describe the government- lead in developing countries like ;Amerika, England, Germany and Japan; and to compare the efficient model of personnel training.Although showing differences in ??implementation but strives to achieve the common goal of providing provisions to ensure the training is going well. The author mention it provides good reference to strengthen the government ?lead, strengthen the legislation of vocational education, strengthen the overall plan and supervise, and establish the cooperation mechanism.

The author has started writing specifying keywords should be known and so began a discussion on the topic. The author have a very good in processing due to problems in school-enterprise Cooperation is more specific that can identify the cause of how the occurrence constraints to progress chinese vocational education. The topic has an objective to be achive. The author has made a claims that government-lead is the only way to break through the current bottleneck of vocational education development but ?an evidence was provided is not reliable. The conclusion also are drawn just a simple word and not complement. The principal of the text can be better organized

As a conclusion it can be said that the author has managed to transfer information on how to solve the bottleneck problem as experienced by chinese vocational education which should strengthen the school-enterprise cooperation.? To the success of this cooperation must be the government in terms of provision of assistance and reform The author seems to only look to the government-lead, although the schools are supposed to provide entrepreneurship education as recommended by Robert Kowasaki in her book, rich dad, poor dad where he suggested that education for entrepreneurship have since translated children from school. Similarly, vocational education should start at school with teachers who are trained as discussed by Qiu Feiyue and Lifang Le (2010). Quality education will produce a quality student . I am? agree with Malaysia system vocational school that was up grade to be a college and develop the teachers skill.

Cold-weather birds flock to Florida - but why? | StAugustine.com

Razorbills, cold-weather birds with penguin-like features, have been unlikely visitors to South Florida over the past few weeks, attracting bird watchers to the coast of Palm Beach County and creating speculation about why they?re here.

?This is a historic ornithological event,? said Carl Edwards, an avid bird-watcher from West Palm Beach who took three boat trips out of the Boynton Inlet recently to observe the Northeastern, ocean-going birds, which have also been spotted off Miami Beach and the Florida Keys.

Edwards estimates he saw 900 razorbills during two trips out of the inlet on Dec. 14. Almost all of the birds were headed south, he said, most likely in search of food.

Black with white undersides, razorbills weigh about 1.6 pounds, measure about 17 inches in length and have a wingspan of about 26 inches, according to the National Audubon Society.

Razorbills can dive several hundred feet below the ocean?s surface to find food, and can walk upright, like penguins, on land. Their diet consists of small, cold-water fish of the northern Atlantic, including juvenile cod, sand lance and capelin.

Their predators include Arctic foxes and polar bears.

Razorbills have been spotted 14 times in Florida in the past, but only single or a few birds were reported in previous sightings, said Marshall Iliff, a bird expert with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and lead author of a recent article about the Florida razorbill invasion on the website eBird.org.

Recent razorbill sightings off the South Florida coast have included flocks of more than 20, Iliff said.

Why they are here is open to debate.

Andy Kratter, an ornithologist with the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, said beach erosion and other disturbances brought by Hurricane Sandy to the coasts of New York and New Jersey probably prompted the razorbills to fly south.

However, Iliff of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology said he believes above-average sea-surface temperatures in the Northeast are responsible.

Iliff said the reason for the rise in sea-surface temperature is unclear, but he noted on eBird that it could be related to cycles of ocean warming and cooling or long-term climate change.

The first razorbills documented off the coast of Palm Beach County were spotted Dec. 9 from the north jetty at the Boynton Inlet, said Linda Humphries of the Audubon Society of the Everglades.

?I?m really excited that they?re here,? Humphries said. ?People have been coming from all over Florida to see them.?

After razorbills were seen off Miami Beach and the Keys, bird-watchers tracked them as they continued their journey north along Gulf Coast toward the Florida Panhandle.

Although the unprecedented migration has been exciting for bird-watchers, it has been tough on some of the birds, several of which have washed up dead on Florida beaches.

The Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, which operates a wildlife hospital in Jupiter, took in another type of Northeastern sea bird called a dovekie last weekend that apparently was too weak to feed and had washed ashore.

Malnourished sea birds tend to bob around on the ocean and eventually wash ashore, said David Hitzig, executive director of the wildlife sanctuary, which helps them regain strength before releasing them back into the wild.

But Hitzig said the birds? prognosis generally is not good.

?Once they wash up on shore, you?re looking at the tail end of their story,? Hitzig said.

New Android device for the Holidays? Download these games first!

I can't figure out what I love more: The smell of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, or the smell of new electronics that you open on Christmas. Just in case the fat man leaves a new Android device under your tree this holiday, I've compiled a list to jumpstart your mobile gaming. There are so many great games being released all the time in the Google Play store. So many in fact, that it took me a few hours just to narrow my choice down to these few games released in 2012! Just in case these don't tickle your fancy, I've provided some alternative options that are similar for each entry. Down the chimney we go!

This is easily one of my top games of 2012, but it also happens to be a massively entertaining and accessible game which is also free, making this the perfect place to start your mobile gaming career. It?s an auto-scrolling endless runner full of random fun. Proof? You play as a disgruntled evil lab employee who steals a machine gun propelled jetpack. That?s to say nothing of all the vehicles, costumes, and accessories you?ll see as you progress through the ranks. This game was developed by Halfbrick Studios, who also brought us the Fruit Ninja games. You can feel safe starting with pretty much any game from this studio.

Similar Games to Download: The psychedelic Whale Trail offers a similar if more colorful take on the genre, while Off the Leash gives us a similar experience from a top down perspective. Also, it has puppies!

Not so long ago, it felt like we were all drowning in an ocean of towers and creeps with all the tower defense games around. The genre isn?t the unstoppable force it once was, but there are still plenty of gems to enjoy. This little ditty from Com2Us is bright, colorful, and is very well balanced with a whole lot of variety to the missions and modes. Com2Us is one of those developers that has a representative for pretty much every genre. Though not all their games are top notch, this one is definitely worth your time.

Similar Games to Download: Sentinel 3: Homeworld and Fieldrunners make up two of the other best tower defense games on mobile, but if you?re really hardcore, check out the superb reverse tower defense game, Anomaly: Warzone Earth.

I know literally all of you have probably heard of or played Angry Birds by now, but I still think they deserve a mention on this list. Developer Rovio had a fantastic 2012, introducing gravity mechanics and a sci-fi aesthetic in Angry Birds Space, and then refining and mixing those elements with the glory of the original Star Wars trilogy. Star Wars-inspired locations, level designs, characters, and powers make a good game into a great one, and there?s no prequel stuff to be found anywhere! No Jar Jar Binks, no midi-chlorians. Feel free to check out Rovio?s other titles, Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies for more puzzle fun.

Similar Games to Download: If you?d like to continue your physics-based fun, Where?s My Water? from Disney and Cut the Rope from ZeptoLab are both completely fantastic, and each have totally adorable mascots!

Going back to the strategy side of gaming, Great Big War Game is the biggest and best turn based strategy title in the series from Rubicon Development. The previous games, Great Little War Game and GLWG: All Out War, are also excellent titles, but GBWB is the most polished and balanced. It involves the military antics of a character simply called The Generalissimo. The hexagon tiled battlefields of this world seem simple at first, but there is striking depth and complexity. With loads of unit types and maps with a functioning fog of war, this game is sure to keep your tactical side happy. Also, there is a free lite version to try.

Similar Games to Download: A more innovative and novel hex-tiled turn based strategy game is the very intelligent Greed Corp. However, I?ve got to recommend the far more casual yet delightfully sadistic Plague Inc.

Apple named this title from Ubisoft the 2012 game of the year, and I completely agree, but I was totally praising this game before it was cool! Based on the utterly brilliant Rayman: Origins (a platformer to rival even Mario), this auto-scrolling runner manages to keep all the creativity and bizarre charm of its predecessor, but with bite-sized levels and half of the controls removed! Seriously though, they stripped ?Origins? down to its core for this simple game, but it?s just as fun and the visuals are just as jaw-droppingly crisp and vibrant as ever. It?s a bit more challenging than other runners, but do not skip this one.

Similar Games to Download: This is one of a kind, but some other platformers to enjoy include the stylistic and unique Jazz: Trump?s Journey, or the adorable arts and crafts world of Paper Monsters.

My dear readers, we have finally arrived. The more hardcore among you have likely been wondering where all the gunplay and violence realistically rendered in 3D have been hiding in regards to this list. Look no further. Just released a couple weeks ago, Modern Combat 4 continues the Call of Duty-style mobile gaming saga. Modern Combat 3 dropped the ball with its Android port, with tons of bugs and glitches, but Modern Combat 4 is more polished, even if the single player campaign is a bit more repetitive. All the other games on this list are simple, so it might take some more practice and experience to get used to the complex touch controls offered here, but if you want more action packed, console-esque games on your device, this is an explosive place to start.

Similar Games to Download: Gameloft?s sci-fi FPS N.O.V.A. 3 and its predecessors are also excellent. Meanwhile, games like Shadowgun from Madfinger and Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies from Glu Mobile can help round out that trigger finger itch.

Schmitz on Family Planning, 1970 | Pro-lifist

A speech by Representative John G. Schmitz (R-CA), November 16, 1970.

Representative Schmitz

Representative Schmitz

Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to the Family Planning Act, H.R. 19318. There was a time when Americans made a joke about how all politicians could be counted on to be in favor of motherhood, because it was assumed that motherhood was one value and blessing which no one in his right mind could dispute.

??????????????? Tragically for our country, those days are past. The familiar joke is not heard very much today. For motherhood is now under systematic, vehement and almost incessant attack. And I am waiting to see how many of my colleagues in this House, which represents the American people, will stand up with me today for motherhood and for human life, and against the ?family planners? for whom motherhood is the enemy. The fact that no other member of the committee on which I serve, the committee which brings this bill before you, has been willing to do so shows just how far we have come from the days when the creation of new human life in the mother?s womb was held in universal honor.

We could make being for motherhood a joke when everyone was for it. But ceasing to be for motherhood is a different matter entirely. For motherhood is the channel for the transmission of human life. Without it, there is no future.

What the population planners never seem to remember is that population trends change, ebbing and flowing like the tide at different periods in history. You simply cannot take figures for a given brief period in the present and project them unchanged into the future with any significant probability of accuracy. In just the single decade of the 1960s, according to the preliminary returns from the 1970 census, we overestimated our population by no less than 5? million people. Instead of the 205,700,000 Americans who had been projected ? and ticked off on the famous population clock in the Department of Commerce ? there were only 200,200,000.

If we can go 5? million wrong in just 10 years ? nearly 3 percent of our total population ? what are we to think of projections now so blithely made for 30, 50, or 100 years into the future? Their appearance of precise statistical accuracy is pure sham.

What we now see is a more steady reduction of the birth rate in America, going back to 1957. According to the report of the White House National Goals Research Staff, July 4, 1970, Figure 2-1, it has fallen from 3.8 births per mother in 1957 to less than 2.5 today. If this trend continues and is artificially accelerated by massive government programs such as the bill before us would establish, we may well see not only an end to the baby boom of the early 1950s, but an actual population decline resulting from a growing and officially sponsored hostility to conception.

Such declines have occurred, seriously weakening or destroying the nations involved, without the benefit of modern contraceptive techniques and without official promotion, in many significant instances in history, ranging from the last years of the western Roman Empire to 19th century France. It is noteworthy that Communist China, which has the largest population of any nation on earth and whose government certainly has the power to impose population control, has rejected this as a policy. The contraceptive mentality can mean national suicide.

The Bill before us today, brought up under suspension of the rules on the very first day after a month-long recess, would commit the U.S. government to the life prevention business at an initial cost of more than a quarter of a billion dollars. We all know from long experience with Federal programs how much this figure is certain to rise once the program is underway ? with no end in sight.

The bill contains no restriction whatever on the age or the marital status of the persons who may receive contraceptives paid for by the funds it appropriates. Dr. Alan F. Guttmacher, president of Planned Parenthood-World Population, admitted in testimony before the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee that his organization ? which would in all likelihood receive substantial funding from the appropriations provided by this bill ? now gives contraceptives to young teenage children in family life classes in several large cities. Thus it is simple truth to say ? unpalatable as a blunt statement of the truth may be ? that in practice it will amount to officially condoning not only fornication, but statutory rape.

We are told that the bill is intended to prevent the birth of unwanted children. What makes a child unwanted? A paper by Arthur A. Campbell, Chief of the Natality Statistics Branch, National Center for Health Statistics, U.S. Public Health Service, included in the transcript of the committee hearings on this bill, may serve to put this talk of unwanted children in true perspective, and to give an idea of the price some Americans now put on human life:

??????????????? The prevention of 451,000 births would allow 135,000 women to work for four years. If they earned an average of only $2,000 annually (assuming that some work part-time and some work full-time), their earnings would total $8,000 each, or $7,260 when discounted to the first year at a rate of four percent. Since only 30 percent of the women are assumed to work, the additional earnings would average $2,178 per unwanted birth avoided. In this case the economic benefit is 7.8 times greater than the cost of $300 per unwanted birth avoided.

This is one of the most chilling statements I have ever read. There was a time when Americans viewed human life as priceless. Now it seems the price is down to $2,178. At this rate, how long will it be before we drop to rock bottom ? the value of a few cents, or maybe a few dollars now with inflation, that has been set for the chemical constituents of a human body?

By contrast to this appalling product of the statistician?s art, I would like to share with you a most significant comment of my distinguished colleague from Kentucky, Dr. Tim Lee Carter, who ? though he supported this bill in committee ? had this to say in response to the witness who tried to tell the committee how mothers often hated their newly born children:

??????????????? I was interested in paragraph 1 on page 6 of your testimony in which you say that ? you talk about the lady, I believe, on page 5, who cursed her children or her unborn child. You know, I think that is the unusual thing. Some way or other almost every mother who gives birth to a child loves that child the moment it is born with an undying, unremitting love. It has been my fortune to deliver thousands of youngsters, and I think that statement is perhaps just a little bit on the unusual side. It may occur, but in the 27 years I was in practice, I do not believe I ever heard a mother curse an unborn child. And I hope I never do.

We are told that this bill is needed to reduce the number of illegitimate births and the medical and psychological complications for both mother and child often resulting from them. But in England, which in the past decade has launched a massive program to make contraception available to everyone, illegitimacy has substantially increased. In the 13 to 15 year age group, it has tripled.

Supposedly this bill would not now permit abortion, which its earlier version would have permitted, because of a clause inserted in the new bill drawn up after the committee hearings ? a clause which was not in the bill passed by the Senate, and may not survive the conference committee. But this clause, section 1008, does not specifically define the term abortion. Consequently, its prohibition of abortion might well be interpreted not to apply to those contraceptive methods which destroy the fetus very soon after conception ? methods which Dr. Sheldon J. Segal of the Biomedical Division of the Population Council in New York, testifying before the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee on this bill, frankly admitted were early abortifacients. The development of abortion-inducing chemicals such as prostaglandins, also described in material presented to the committee, is further obscuring the distinction between abortion and contraception. Furthermore there is no prohibition of any kind on federally assisted sterilization as a method of family planning.

Again and again we are told that this bill is strictly voluntary, that no woman will be forced to accept contraceptives or have her babies killed, or their lives prevented, against her will.

Now I ask all of you, in the name of reason and common sense, how many more times are we going to be fooled by this perennial argument? How many more times are we going to pass bills, assuring ourselves, and everyone else who is concerned, that they are really harmless because strictly voluntary, only to come back a few years later and make them compulsory when the people have become more accustomed to the idea? Surely you all remember Federal aid to education, approved by the House just 5 years ago, with no strings attached and strictly without Federal control ? or so we were told. Now we are constantly debating just how we shall go about forcing schools accepting Federal aid ? which means virtually all of them now ? to comply with our regulations, and how we shall go about forcing children to attend them. There was a time when collective bargaining in this country was voluntary. But then we decided that there was not enough of it, and made it compulsory. The list is endless.

I know that many of you, probably most of you, now approve of the use of Federal aid to impose certain requirements on local schools, and of mandatory collective bargaining. We are not debating those issues here today. I mention them only to show that when proponents of a massive Federal birth control program come before you and insist that they mean it to be always strictly voluntary, history shows that the exact opposite is very likely to be the eventual outcome of legislation like this.

I will ask members of the House this question: In your own careers in Congress how many bills have you seen that you have started out as voluntary measures and have them become mandatory? I served 5? years in a state legislature, and one of the most common procedures was to change ?may? to ?shall.? After we put through a voluntary bill, we then moved on to make it mandatory.

I will make a prediction at this point. Mark my words. If this bill passes today, in a few years you will see ?may? changed to ?shall? when it is found out that the objective stated in this bill cannot be achieved by voluntary means.

Several witnesses at the hearings on this bill made it very clear that they advocate a voluntary birth control program only so long as it works. If it does not work to their satisfaction, they will go to a compulsory program. They leave no place for the alternative of the rejection of the contraceptive mentality by a free, life-loving people.

As Dr. John R. McCain of Atlanta, GA said in testimony on this bill before the Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee:

??????????????? Family planning on a voluntary basis is the most acceptable approach. Unless voluntary methods are successful, actual control of population by compulsory measures may be resorted to at some future time.

And to quote again from Dr. Segal?s testimony:

??????????????? There are people, serious demographers, who believe that the population growth rate, the population problems in general in this country, can create problems that can only be solved by strong line methods, by giving up the concept of voluntarism and regulating the number of children people can have, by coercion, by legislative means that will be economically coercive, and so on.

Now, I feel that we must give voluntary family planning a chance to prove whether or not it can bring us to a zero population growth level. We have not given it a chance.

Dr. McCain further explained how funds appropriated under this bill would be used to propagandize for contraception, to change attitudes in its favor, and to put pressure on people to prevent births:

??????????????? Psychological and sociological research is required to determine the methods of motivating the population, male and female, to initiate effective family planning and to utilize the methods consistently? We have had in the experience of our program in the Atlanta area what they have spoken of sometimes as the Madison Avenue approach. In other words, by no means that it is terrifying or fearful, but that it is the thing to do. In other words, the popular thing for the patient after she has delivered, if she has not begun on family planning at that time to be sure that she returns. The pressure of her peers by their questions. ?You have not started on your pills yet?? Or, ?You have not had your IUD put in yet?? The concern of the block area, the community area, that anybody that does not do that is just not quite up on the current way of doing things.

In view of all this explicit testimony, I frankly cannot put much stock in the many pious disclaimers of coercive intent on the part of the proponents of this bill. Rather, I regard it as a long step toward a Nazi-like tyranny in our land. When government gets into bed with you, surely that is the ultimate in government control.

Finally, the most grotesque argument for this bill is that it will somehow help in the fight against pollution, as is indicated in the testimony of organizations such as the Sierra Club in support of it. A moment?s though should make it perfectly clear that a single human being, simply by being alive, produces negligible pollution. It is technology that pollutes, not people. We can, and we must, bring under control those technological excesses and processes which are dangerously befouling our air and water. We should not, and must not, let ourselves be persuaded to try to eliminate pollution by eliminating people.

I ask my colleagues who have the interest of the poor, and of our minority groups especially close to their hearts, to think very carefully about who profits and who suffers by this approach to our pollution problem. The people at whom this bill is specifically aimed are the poor ? and less specifically, the minorities. Are they to be made scapegoats and victims of a problem arising from our great industries? As Msg. Alphonse Popek of Milwaukee, WI said in testifying on this bill:

??????????????? Pollution, though existent, is the convenient smokescreen for the sinister business of eliminating people. ?People cause pollution ? pollution is bad ? therefore eliminate people.? Which people? All people? It seems that non-quality people are the transgressors. But who is to identify these non-quality people? Does it not seem that the present bill provides for government working through its highest and lowest departments and through funding of individual and private agencies to make the final determination? Little people do cause pollution, yet there are many vested interests in this country which cause even greater and more serious physical pollution, and some of these interests are known and some are yet to be determined. All must be stopped by every technological and scientific effort before human life is to be snuffed out at any point along the spectrum of existence. My concern relates to the removal of truly dangerous pollutants which would not only contaminate the clear streams of morality, and the pure air of religious freedom, but the human rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I can find no better words with which to conclude than those eloquently spoken by a Wisconsin housewife, Mrs. Alvin Emmons, who traveled 2,000 miles to come to Washington to testify against the bill in committee. Listen to her. I am convinced that she voices the heartfelt protest of the best and soundest instincts of our people, on this legislation:

??????????????? It is neither the function nor the purpose of government to sponsor or promote programs of population control. Government?s proper role is to protect the lives of all its citizens including the unborn and to protect the right of the citizens to transmit life. Passage of this law will only add to the irresponsibility and over-permissiveness which seems to be running rampant in all areas of living today. We urge you to vote against this bill and ask rather that you exert every effort to protect the home and family and the very right to life. The time is NOW to stop the tearing down of the home and family through the passage of any immoral or amoral laws.
